ECU tune, people are saying 'Yes' & 'No'?

Hi,

I bought a second hand 3.0 Spec B 6 speed manual last week and have a few of questions about tuning.

1) Are there any disadvantages?
2) Do you risk any engine components do to the changes made?
3) Does the little green shift light work in "I" mode?

Lastly, thought expecting a no answer, it would be cool if
4) Can the little green shift light be programmed to work as a rev limiter warning in S# - as in comes on at 6000rpm or other number like a true shift light?

I will comment as I have been a receiver of these services - the following answers are based on my own experience and may not apply to you - it seems you have a 2007 or later car?

1) Are there any disadvantages? Not in my experience
2) Do you risk any engine components do to the changes made? Not with the skilled tuners i have used, but ultimately a bad tuner can definitely do bad things to your motor
3) Does the little green shift light work in "I" mode? No idea

1) Only ever had 3 people want to go back to a closer to stock tune(but with some refinement) and two of them were afraid of losing their licences for life.
2) Subaru implemented safety features are still active, the common EZ30 issue of headgaskets can also be eliminated(or atleast drastically reduced)
3) Yes, that it the shift RPM to keep the engine in closed loop fuel economy mode.
4) There is ECU logic which could be manipulated for S# but personally, I tune the car so the throttle shuts as the engine approaches rev limiter to assist with the gearshift and as a physical reminder to change gears.

Thanks guys. I am definately considering a tune, but want to get used to the car for a while first. It will depend on cost of tune, and if i can hide the process from the wife

If the tune is such a licence stealer, just how much (as a %) can be extracted from the engine by a tune - without doing any intake or exhaust mods?
Because the car is pretty bloody quick in stock form already.

What sort of fuel economy improvements can be gained? I'm currently getting 8-9L/100km in mixed highway urban.

Thats cool that the little green light works as expected in I mode post tune.

The stock tunes on H6 are CRAP!!
Highly recommend every H6 owner to get it tuned and really see the real potential from factory.
2-5000 rpms has soooooo much more torque now and it does get very addicted.
Fuel wise is about 3+L/100kms better now.

Hi Timbo,

From my own experience

1)Not that I can see
2)Not from personal experience as well but I don't give it the car all the time.

I had my 3.0R tuned by Michael South and couldn't be happier with the results. I wasn't expecting a huge gain in kw as with many other N/A Subaru engines but the car drove a lot better off the line, a much beefier mid to top end.

20 to 30% gain in peak power, achieved by making more torque everywhere plus holding the torque to rev limiter. The engine is seriously detuned, from 1200rpm to 2800rpm the gain is actually over 100% due to the torque hole that makes 3000+rpm 'feel' impressive/quick so the torque gets the car pulling from 1200rpm

More torque below 3000rpm = better fuel economy, even if you have fun with it. Customers have seen 5's for highway runs including having a bit of fun with it. I think the best example was a guy who had used half a tank of highway driving on his way to see me, with average of 9.8L/100 for his near 3 hour trip then I loaded new tune in, we did a few runs in the car and by then end of the session, the gauge was on 9.4 despite having some fun with it!"

HI I had from Kido Tuning do mine on one of his trips to Brisbane.

It is much better than std maps and smooth power delivery as well.

On highway trip to coast get mid 8litres/100kms and around town it is mid 12litres/100kms but awesome fun
