HELP!

Postby Woodduck » Sun Apr 05, 2009 8:59 pm

Was driving along at 60ks in my liberty ('06 3.0r b manual) and it started to bunny hop a little bit, just out of the blue. I told my mate that id drop him at his car and we'd go home (as im getting my service on wed, figured id ask them then). Then, sometimes when i accelerated it would make a strange rattling/pinging noise. I dropped my mate off and started to drive home (20km drive to my house). After about 10ks of random bunny hopping (with cruise control set) and strange noises, my car lost power and the engine light came on. PLEASE HELP!? What has happened to my car? Is it safe to drive back into the suby dealer? The engine light stayed on the rest of the way home, and the pinging/ratteling noise was still there...but it didnt loose power again...iv only had the car a couple of weeks!

BTW- checked oil, water etc and all good. I only run 98 in my car too.

Same Problem

Postby Jay » Mon Apr 06, 2009 8:10 pm

Woodduck I have the same problem in my MY06 3.0R spec.B liberty 6 speed MT for 3 months now, been in and out of subaru 5 times, they have no idea of the problem. I had the same symptoms(bunny Hopping).
The car is still in subaru (has been for past week and a half for the 5th time).
Subaru are yet to give me and answer! ANY SUBARU GURU'S out there please tell us your thoughts?

Oh yay!!! Sounds like one of those FUN problems! The mechanics in the local subaru are supposed to be extreamly good, so hopfully between the two of us Jay E we can sort this out  They moved it ahead to tomorow, so fingers crossed all goes well!

a suggestion

Postby loweart » Tue Apr 07, 2009 6:09 am

I'm certainly no mechanical expert, but from reading what you guys have been experiencing and what you have described to date has been done, it sounds a good deal like a problem that I recall being described by guys who have the GTB. The problem I recall previously being described mentioned the CEL ( check engine light ) coming on and numerous resets only see it coming back on either immediately or some many Kms down the track, pinging, rough idle, stuttering have also been mentioned.

In many of those reported cases, it turned out that the O2 sensor was faulty and sending or not sending correct data. After the O2 sensor was replaced and ECU reset, all back to normal. I also vaguely recall that there may be two of these O2 sensors, please don't quote me on that one.

Certainly worth checking out.

if it throws a CEL its usualy just a case of plugging in a scanner seeing what the code is and replace the part, reset the ecu and hopefully all good again.

do you have access to a obd scanner or similar?

Well i took it in this morn so im sure they'll chuck the scanner on it. It ran pretty good this morn actually. The engine light was still on, and it still sounded a bit different to usual...but it didnt idle rough, or bunny hop etc. The only thing it did do was when i stopped at a stop sign with the clutch fully in, it stalled. Finger crossed this guy knows what he's talking about...

Ill keep you up to date

What dealership did you drop your car into Woodduck? I might tell the center mine is in to get in contact with your local center to try resolve the problem. Oh and my car over the 3 weeks I was told to keep driving the car completely died when stopping 3 times.

Got it back this arvo. Running good...for the moment im sure. All they did was ECU reset...hope it works for good, but dont like my chances...

Apparently the fault codes came up as cam sensor errors i think they said. He said if it happens again bring it back and they'll replace the sensors, as its against their policy to replace sensors on first visit if they run fine after an ecu reset.

Hopfully all is good...but like i said im not holding my breath lol

One positive, is that after the service it seems to be running even smoother than when i picked it up (which i didnt think was possible lol). Everything seems smoother and more responsive. Although they did wash my car and dry it with some sort of cloth that put lint AND very light surface scratches on my lib. It needed a polish up anyways so no biggy!
Like i said, will keep you up to date on this

Jay- Sorry i missed your post. The local suby dealer is called auto-synergy, its in Mildura, Vic. What ill do, is ill wait and see if it happens again, and if it does and they replace something we can try to sort it out then..but atm all they did was a ECU reset, so wouldnt be much point in getting the 2 dealers in contact just yet.

Woodduck,

I was told the;
1st time: that a reset would do
2nd time: the left cam sensor needed to be replaced.(1.5 weeks)
3rd time: the engine light was on because it was a new part(left sensor)
4th time: the right sensor needed to be replaced.(1 week)
5th time: not an electrical fault,"we'll be pulling the engine out to check all cam parts"(so far 1.5 weeks and counting)
