Its 4-5ish hours of labour and the tensioner was $250ish.

$800 sounds pretty good, compared to $1800. Wondering if anyone in Sydney can give me a place and price they had it done for.

As someone who has done this themselves.

In terms of the actual parts the only thing you need is the tensioner:
TENSIONER CHAIN
[Part#: 13142AA030] x 1 @ $57.05 USD

Apart from that you have:
Seals (sealant and seals for the front cover)
Coolant
Oil
Labour

The chain itself does not need replacing, the system is designed to be not replaced EXCEPT Subaru messed up and didn't quite design the tensioner part right. The new tensioners are different to the original items.

I would suggest finding somewhere that regularly services a lot of Subaru's as they should be familiar with all of this and might not rip you off so much.

Bookmarked for P/Ns once my tick is a bit louder I think this will inevitably have to be done. Am maybe considering having a go at this with some help from my mechanic. But theres a step by step walkthrough in the manual

Re: Timing chain tensioner "pinging fixed"

Postby BATMAN87 » Thu Dec 04, 2014 8:14 pm

Hi all just an update, from tonight's lesson.

I resolved the noise issue I was getting with a $14 bottle of octane booster.
My problem was a rattle/ chattering/ ticking noise at 2500rpm to 3000rpm mostly on the highway going 100km - 110km.
I got both tensioner changed after reading around on the forum, this cost me $1300 all up including 3 radiator hoses... It did not fix my problem. After youtubing saw a vid of a foresters making the exact same noise "pinging".
103ron in the tank fixed 99% of my issue.

F*cking spewing I didn't try this before the tensioner change.

Just my issue was recreating the noise to someone who has time to drive up and down the highway with me.

So today's hot tip is try a bottle of octane booster before you go with the tensioner change to the same spec problem I was having.

Now looking forward to a dyno tune, and not someone to wright off my car.

Looking to get this done in melbourne! Does anyone have any recommendations?

Subaru quoted 6 hours labour at $149 per hour, plus another $330 for parts...

So it’s now Oct 2024 and I’ve suffered pinging & rough running in my 2013 2.5i for six months. Before running to mechanic, I tried adding 300ml Nulon octane booster & injector cleaner, as well as filling up with 98ULP instead of 91ULP…….pinging has gone and engine running smoother. I’m considering running on 98ULP permanently….car is much more responsive.

I took care of this by fitting an H6 fuel flap to our MY05 2.5i 4eat: 98ron ONLY :beach:
