If you happen to find anything let me know, cant current register the car due to the leak and really need to get it back on the road.

I agree its a huge price but at this point i dont see any other option other than replace with an equally old/worn engine.

Headgasket leak will not prevent a Rego Inspection. Find a different rego inspector

OK then seems like sourcing the rebuild kit at the right price is the main problem. With more of these engines approaching 200,000 and beyond rebuild kits should start to become more available, then maybe costs will come down. Bearings, rings, pistons and block honing should not be an issue, it's the heads that worry me more as a lot of money can go into a head rebuild especially if it's had a hard life. $5850 for a reconditioned change over engine may not be that bad if the heads were reconditioned. So with that in mind rebuilding your own unit to that level should be around $3000 - $3800 for parts and labour then installation. Finding a reputable engine builder will be the next challenge, one that stands by what they do and not duck and weave when things go wrong like excessive oil consumption which was a big problem from new for some owners.

Let's keep updating this rebuild thread because I'm sure more of us will be facing this issue in the future.

Up in the Hunter Valley and Central Coast I would recommend Marshall at Autocraft Subaru.

He has a great love for the Subaru performance range and is versed in the h6 engine as he has done one within the last month, that I know of.

Good prices and high quality aftermarket and genuine Subaru parts installed professionally, can't really ask for more.

Unfortunately he can't source an engine at this point

No luck, lots of searching.

Contacted many establishments in the USA only to receive a polite but negative response.

Here is my best estimate for a full H6 engine rebuild kit with parts sourced from PartSouq.
These are in USD and the freight component is not included.
Note that this is a guide only, as final piston size and bearing size selections need to be made.

Have you taken the motor out and pulled the head off ...could you not just replace head gasket ...get the head crack checked etc might save a heaps on a full rebuild ....
Always understood the H6 to be a strong long life motor ....300-500,000kms etc .... owned three different H6 over 100,000kms travelled brilliant motor ...and I do thrash them ..but also fussy owner not scared to get my hands dirty
