Slow build for supercharge

Postby nixwrx » Mon Aug 18, 2014 11:01 am

Hey guys just wondering about 'future-proofing' any exhaust mods I do now, for what hopefully will be a supercharge build in a year or two.

Car is 2005 3.0RB manual, and has the base Kido tune (thanks Matt!).

Apart from the tune, the engine, exhaust etc. etc. is currently completely stock.

I should get my Raptor headers this week and want to get those on soon. My question is around the rest of the exhaust... if I'm going to install the Raptor headers soon, but expect to go supercharged eventually, what else would be worth doing/changing at the same time as the header install.

Or to put it another way: What don't I want to do as part of the header install, that I'll simply have to undo if/when it's time for the supercharger.

Cats, piping diameters, mufflers, etc. etc. I'm working on figuring this out myself as best I can but think I'm getting a bit stuck, so was hoping for a bit of advice/guidance.

Thanks all :)

Raptor headers with 2 high flow cats, with 3rd cat deleted. Keep existing catback for now, we proved on Ansons from WA that part is not exhaust restrictive.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the heads up on the exhaust.
I will keeps this in mind for my bus.
Any recommendations for the high flow cats?
Is the 3rd cat delete a straight-pipe substitution?
Cheers!

Any quality 100cpi or even 200cpi cat will suffice.

3rd cat delete is a straight pipe... or a hot dog if you want to look legal? ;)

Will cat choice have any appreciable impact on back pressure for the H6?

What are the pipe diameters from header outlet flange to Y pipe to centre pipe?

Having fitted the headers a while back I had a good look at the OEM exhaust system to decide what to do with the rest of the exhaust.

I believe that there are benefits from fitting higher flowing front cats and replacing the third cat with a hotdog style resonator or if you want more noise a straight through pipe. Back from the third cat the OEM resonator is already a straight through item so it would not need replacing. The rear mufflers do need to be changed as the OEM ones are a classic twin tube side by side design for quite operation.

Any improvements I think are at the front of the system and the rear, the middle third cat/resonator section should not prove a problem.

Thanks all for your feedback so far

How about piping - 2.25" versus 2.5"? Much of a muchness? Or does one size really better match one application, and the other size another application (in terms of power and torque profile).

And would this really make any sort of difference in sound - volume, drone, raspiness (all other things being equal)

Keen to hear actual tuning experiences with this... cough cough...

(note the actual application that I'm chasing is to keep the Lib as a daily driver and for her to last, so while not looking to push the KW limit on the car would definitely like higher numbers across the rev band, and would like to keep the torque profile as flat as possible with things kicking in as early as possible)

2.5" from catback would be my preference to the Y pipe and then 2.25" each aide
