Rattle/knock at 3000 rpm 3.0R-B

Well I just want to update this thread as the engine has changed its personality again. Im not sure what it means so I want to document it here. Today is a warm day (35 degrees ambient) and it started without chain rattle and sounds ok. Ive driven to work, home, work at about 8kms each way. When I made the above vid it was getting really noisy by half way and ticking away at idle (which is how it was when Matt saw it) but today its smooth as silk and pulling like a train (on the new tune) The only way I can get it to make any noise at all is to hold the revs at about 2000->2500 rpm with no load, and then it ticks/rattles a little and is still a lot quieter than in the video above. Does that still sound normal for a bad bottom end, or could it be some other factor? Still yet to try unplugging coils.

Sounds like you have dodged a bullet... it was definitely audible from the centre of the engine on the passenger side but it may have just been the noisiest timing chain tensioner known the mankind

@ Antus, that would be great news if that's all the problem was!

I've however resigned to the fact that my noise is a bearing, once again Occam's razor wins...
Ordered a second hand engine with a warranty and only 50 000km and should have it in the car
by next Wednesday.

Gonna try to get it tuned ASAP to prevent this happening again!
I take it you're happy with your tune so far?

@ Matt, when are you going to be in the Melbourne area again?

And yes, im very happy with the tune. I believe there is an increase in power (and there should be looking at the tune) but the most stand out feature is that its much much smother - both at idle, and under load. It feels like a new engine (better than new) with really smooth delivery of power. I cant wait to try it with a new timing chain tensioner. Who knows how much timing half of the engine is getting at the moment, and possibly with knock retard affecting both sides too

Might be worth draining the engine oil into a glass jar or bowl, let the oil sit overnight and check the bottom for metal filings. No metal = good

Okay, just got my car back today with a 'new' (50 000km) engine, works like a charm now!
Although $3000 solution is not what I was hoping for, I hope your car is still running well antus!

Good to hear! So was yours definitely the bottom end, or was that solution the least stuffing around guaranteed to work answer?

Im still stuck in a state of limbo. Everyone is getting busy for christmas and nobody can tell me for sure that the bottom end is OK. Its just been serviced with an oil change so no metal in the oil wont prove there was not any before. I _think_ its just the tensioner and the shop maybe can do it next week but Im struggling to drop the cash without being sure. Logic dictates that if it can warm up and drive 16kms without ticking then it cant be the bottom end and a loose chain sounds like the kind of thing that could cause the ticking sound (though im not sure what component can tick like that without taking damange) and it sounds like they are known for tensioner issues at about 80 or 90 thousand ks but....

Yeah, just got the engine changed to fix the issue once and for all.
Although now I'm getting a check engine light for it running lean,
can't win!

It would suck to drop the money to change the tensioner and have
it not fix the problem... The joys of cars!

Now the christmas and new years holidays are over ive taken my car back to the shop that has changed hands. The new expert had a good listen to the engine and the ticking came and went when it was in front of him and he had the stethoscope on. Unfortunately hes called it a rod bearing and its replacement engine time.

My engine swap cost $3000 all up.

Hope you can get it done cheaper...
