We have the same year and model vehicle, and I have had mine tuned for performance, but it also achieved an improvement in economy. My daily driving pattern is significantly different to yours, so no point comparing the figures.

I have used Shell and Caltex 98 RON Fuel adn achieved some inconsistencies in consumption over time and now use Mobil 8000 98 RON or BP Ultimate 98 RON and both give better and more consistent fuel consumption (Oils ain't oils!)

For a 2nd hand vehicle, there is some mods and maintenance I would recommend, a Power Flush of all the injectors at your next service (or a full removal and ultrasonic clean), then a tune at a reputable aftermarket shop (plenty of recommendations on this forum). On the mods side, the HKS Panel Filter (from PhatGT) is an easy direct replacement of the current air filter element and also contributes to fuel economy, but not as much as clean injectors, good fuel and a good tune.

Thanks for all your advice. On my weekend trip I drove about 250 kms and found a significant improvement in the mileage - averaged 9.8 over the trip - which seems to support the theory that the high usage is due to multiple quite short trips (which will be most of my driving).

I will find a mechanic and take along your advice - hopefully this will help reduce it a bit.

Now that figure is more like the real one! Still some improvement to be seen, but will most likely not be realised until you do a longer haul and a little of that TLC mentioned earlier.

That's more like it Ellie, I got the same with 3 other blokes in the car (sedan) with the boot jammed with camping gear driving from Forster to Sydney and back with the air con on.

Mark, if you could provide a rough idea of how much the injector clean methods you described (Power flush or full removal and ultrasonic clean) are worth as I'm considering doing it. I know we are in different cities and all but some idea would be helpful.

The power flush was done by STI@Docklands, but I am assuming any Subaru Dealer can do it. The injectors remain on the vehicle and it costs about $100.00 last time I did it. The ultrasonic clean is significantly more due to the removal of all six injectors and then if the dealer does not have the ultrasonic cleaning bath, then they have to be sent out. Not had this experience, but then the power flush seems to work ok for my vehicle. I recall figures in the $400 plus category.

Another thing you might try if you do not have your car serviced at Subaru, is the Upper Cylinder clean. Should be done at every service interval and specifically for the city drivers, useful for removing the carbon deposits around the valve seat and faces, also a potential fuel economy improvement.

I recommend staying with the Subaru oils and coolant at least the recomended service intervals, but with lots of city short trip, this should be done somewhere in the 4 to 6 months frequency rather than by kms.

And don't forget the tyres. Low air pressures also contribute to higher fuel consumption. I check these fortnightly.

Cheers for that, I'm on top of the oils, lubricants, upper cylinder cleaner each service and the tyres but will definitely give the power flush a go next time.

Hi all
I have just bought a 2005 liberty 3.0r. After only 100kms I have used a half tank - the meter says the mileage is 20l/100kms. All my driving has been short city trips - however can anyone tell me whether the fuel usage could possibly be that high even for short city driving ??! Thanks.

Some thing is definitely wrong I drive (07 3RB auto ) hills area to Botany using Parramatta Rd peak 70k round trip every day and average 470k to a tank and I dont pussy foot around
And tow a 1200kg boat to Hawks Nest and back most weekends during summer with car full of crap and average 12/100kms

Just got back from a Sydney Melbourne trip and averaged 8.1/100
