Hate to burst your bubble. But that is not distilled water. You have to cool and collect the condensate for distilled water.

Your not bursting any bubble mate, When water is boiled, the water is pure and free of any impurities such as salt, iron, bacteria & calcium. Ive been filing up my batteries for years using this method.

Uhhhh... marki... merely boiling water doesn't get rid of all impurities. Sure, it kills bacteria, but distilled water is exactly as was mentioned before

Distilled water is water that has virtually all of its impurities removed through distillation. Distillation involves boiling the water and then condensing the steam into a clean container, leaving most if not all solid contaminants behind.

All you're doing is making it better to drink if you're just boiling it. If you want distilled water, the easiest solution is to just buy some off the shelf.

Marki, Boiling water actually increases the concentration of impurities such as salts, calcium, and minerals as all you are doing is evaporating some of the water out of the solution. Water boils at a lower temperature than all of those impurities that you want to distill out of it.

What you are suggesting is a heavily scaled down version of how sea salt is "produced". They pull a heap of sea water into basins and let the water evaporate off leaving only the salt (that used to be dissolved in the water) behind.

yep thats right distilled water is harvested by collecting cooled condensate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distilled_water. Buying it off the shelf is the easiest way to get it but if you really want to do it your self you need to get a saucepan fill it with water boil it - set up some large flat heat resistant surface (like a glass chopping board) above the saucepan with one end of it higher than the other (10 - 20 degrees) and a container of sorts at the lower end so the condensate will roll down and collect there.

Lots off work

alternatively you can buy a distilling kit :)

My battery started to go dead after leaving the radio on when washing the car (never used to previously). Car is MY07 3.0RB like yours and was just out of warranty.

Last thing I want is to be stranded somewhere for the sake of a couple of hundred bucks - so in went a new battery and all good since.

OEM battery = not so good I think.
Tar's for getting there - dirt's for racing!

I was lucky: Popped into SUbaru who did a battery test. Battery failed the test and they replaced it under warranty.

huh? That does NOT give you "distilled water". It just kills any bugs which are in it. (You'd have to condense the steam coming out of the kettle to get distilled water...)

You're better off buying a bottle of distilled water from Supercheap or Repco. You can get it with some additives to prolong battery life.

Edit: oops, I only just noticed this topic went onto a second page. Anyway, I'm a "+1" for "boiling water does NOT make it purer".
If you are in Melbourne, you can pretty much get away with using tap water, as it is already very pure and mineral free (assuming the water pipes in your area are in good condition). Boiling it doesn't make it any better.

I had to replace mine about 6 months ago. The expected life is only about 3 years, anything beyond that is a bonus.

Won't be too long before the vast majority of water you guys drink will be from Lake Eildon (equivalent of 10 weeks worth per year) and your new desalination plant.
