What oil weight are you using, and is the noise only when cold? It sounds like noisy tappets (need to check adjust valve clearances).

I'd at a guess say they charge around $45-$60 per axle to replace pads. Excluding the cost of pads.

confirmed by Clarence.
The sound is actually caused by the VTEC kickin in yo. On closer inspection you are actually driving a Honda not a Subaru.

Hey guys,

I'd hate to be a necromancer and revive an old thread.. but after reading this..

I have noticed my MY07 has that Tik TIK TIK sound too.. it sounds like a fan or air intake or something that is tied to engine rpm.. It's very evident when the car first starts up but it goes away after a while..

seriously.. do I need to be concerned?!

Someone explained it in a super technical way in another thread...I shall try find it.

Edit:
cpitts wrote:That ticking noise is due to the hydraulic lifters on that head setup. There's insufficient lubrication at start up due to poor oil flow (standard on a very large number of Subaru's) SO the lifters tap against the cam lobe and make a tapping noise. Once oil has warmed and thinned, it gets up to the top of the engine and all is good in the world. :-)

You can also get this phenomenon if you use very thin oils (like 0W oils) as the 2 metal surfaces squeeze the oil out from between them when they hit together resulting in a bit of a metal on metal tap sound. Reality is that the oil isn't completely removed from the contact and stll gives protection.
