Hey guys, I got my first car a couple of weeks ago, a Subaru Liberty Wagon 2.5 MY08 non turbo auto im 18 (know what you guys are think, ohh god not auto but yeah oh well still love my car!).
Anyway i am totally new to this and i really want to get it at least having some sort of sound to it. I understand im not going to get it like an STI or anything, but i just want it to sound 'nice', give it a good ring to it and i need some help and advice on what to look at and so forth! Just a change in mufflers or what!?

Just a change to some straight through mufflers improves the sound a lot IMHO. Go for Hi Techs, or if you can find some second hand STi quad tips. Personally I don't really like the look of the STi Genomes (big cannon looking things).

You might get yourself on some second hand "Phat" quad tips (they were made by one of the members here about a year ago), but they are highly sought after and lots of existing members already have first dibs

Great first car, although not as affordable as I would have liked haha, but provided much enjoyment over time.

For the cheapest noise increase, try a resonectomy, where you remove the resonator from the air intake box. That will give it a bit of grunt for a N/A engine.A search of the forum should list a bunch of people who have done so already and instructions if you need it.

And if you want more, consider new mufflers as Tek suggested. If you want something brand name like HKS, contact Phat GT at forumparts@gmail.com. Otherwise the best value would be to drop by your local muffler shop and get a custom set made up for you. The problem with using universal mufflers is it will be hit and miss when it comes to what noise you end up with. Where are you located? Perhaps you can ask to listen to a custom setup of some of the members on here who have done it if they're local to get an idea.

Thanks guys for all the help. Yeah I'll proberly look into changing into some straight pipes and the muffler, how much would I be looking at roughly? I just want to get it purring nicely. I like the idea of those HKS mufflers, proberly also take it to the local muffler shop aswell. So overall you guys just think muffler change, are quad tips good?
Just don't want to go over the top for someone like me I just need to get it sounding a heap better than my mates stock bloody sv6 cheaply made haha hate it.

When i first brought my 2.5, i contemplated changing the exhaust for a meatier note, but the fear of driving a car that sounds like them whining lancers and excels worried me. I say do it, & dont forget to post some vids up when all is installed.

I've got an Apexi N1 catback available (Cheap cheap) which I'm sure will give you what you want & it's for a wagon... Go Team Wagon!

How much power loss, and I recall a friend telling me this wasnt legal and there are huge fines?

nah im in melbourne. yeah Im really doing my research so i can get the best out of it. all up how much would i be looking at spending roughly?

He was probably talking about the cat converter. In any case I am talking about the intake tract resonator chamber, as was Jim.

Im from melbourne too, i went down to glenroy exhausts, in roxburgh park, for them to build me a custom exhaust setup i was quoted $500- , but i never ended up gettin the job done.
