There could be two things which are the cause of your complaint.
1. The factory response map for the electronic throttle is pretty conservative and far from being linear. The initial travel of the pedal does not result in much torque response from the engine. It ramps up progressively as you put the throttle down more (it's almost an exponential response curve). The solution is to either get the ECU flashed with a new drive by wire table or get an interceptor unit. Or just put your foot down more/quickly.
2. The dual mass flywheels are heavy, really heavy. Couple that with an engine that doesn't have that much torque to start off with and the time it takes for the engine to spin up can be longer than with the bigger engines. Solution is to convert to a solid/lightweight flywheel and clutch plate to suit.

The auto in the liberty is underpowered and overgeared. The 2.5i feels breathless, and on acceleration feels like your towing a caravan. Its got nothing to do with anything else.

Actually that was my poor assumption. Is he driving a manual or auto??? If the latter then my comments re the flywheel do not apply, and I would agree that the 4EAT transmission is a dog when paired with the 2.5i.

I have the same power issues in mine, After many man hours i think i have found the main cause... the 2.5N/A motor under the bonnet
to combat this some what problem have gone down the handling path so i can fully utilize the 3.7kW and 13Nm of torque on 1 of my spirited drives or club days!
