I am going to send the cursed DMF to where it belongs, to the scrap metal recycling bin! By all reports changing to a standard solid flywheel is no problem and this is actually what Subaru did after running the DMF for a short period in 2004-2005.
The only pro for the DMF is apparent improved preservation of the gearbox and reduced NVH, but since it's the same gearbox pre and post 2004-2005 I can't imagine reliability was really that much of an issue. The many cons as we are finding here, is all the extra moving parts are just susceptible to noise, make it more fragile when driven hard occasionally, and bloody expensive to replace especially since the limited clutch choices cost more too.
Pros for a solid flywheel is better feel (subjective, but it would be from an enthusiast driving point of view), slightly more noise as the revs drop, better heat dissipation and durability, easy to re-surface when changing clutch, and of course much greater choice of which clutch to use and at much lower cost.
For the first time I am not that fussed about preserving my clutch anymore because I want to replace it!
Exedy have a full kit which will do the complete conversion, about $1,100.00 for the parts and around 5-6 hours labor. Most independents charge around $80.00 per hour:
