100,000 K service

Postby talev788 » Sat Oct 17, 2009 8:26 am

Hey guys I'm nearly due for my 100,000 major service soon, im sitting on 98,000 at the moment
Thing is im running on a reaaaly tight budget at the moment and need to get my springs done first before anything which will be 480 bucks
Rego is due 6 days before christmas which also puts me in a bit of shit.

My question is... How many K's over 100,000 am i able to get away with before I'd probably start noticing problems?
I am thinking about putting the service off until about late December/January....

Sounds like you need to get you priorties sorted there mate. The springs can wait get your service done and rego sorted first. If you keep putting it off you risk ruining your nice car

Yeah... I'd have to agree. I mean, it shouldn't be a huge problem to push it, but why risk it? You're just increasing the wear on your car, and that can't be undone. On a side note, where are you getting it serviced?

Well I think Ultratune is the cheapest, and from what I've heard, they do an ok job since it's logbook servicing, but lots of ppl prefer to stick with suby dealers more so for peace of mind really. I don't personally know what the best solution is, seeing as I've only ever had one car before this, But I'm also dreading the 100k service, espec since mine will be around the same time as my rego AND car insurance!!

At the end of the day it all depends on how much you are going to drive in between now and the end of Dec/Jan. The timing belt is the most important part of the service and also the most catastrophic if it goes. That's not to say that the belt will go at 100xxx kms but the risk is increased the longer you leave it go. The 100k service is going to cost you at least $1k but I've heard of it costing up to $1500.

Yeah I got a quote for about 850 from Ultratune, its just i heard they dont use genuine subaru parts? Would that be much of an issue or shouldnt i worry about it?

I'm in the same position matey. I just clocked 100,000kms this weekend... but luckily my last service was a bit late so Subaru told me to bring it back at 107K Kms. I'm already saving my pennies for this one as Subaru said it will cost about $1200 (Suttons).

I gotta agree with the others - leave the springs and do ya service first!

Has the timing belt been replaced? If your MY03 has only just hit 98KKms but the belt was not replaced at 4 years old then it is already way overdue and you should replace it immediately to avoid catastrophic damage to the engine if the belt breaks.

I had the timing belt done plus gearbox and diff oil, air filter, power steering fluid flush and minor service done when I first picked up the car which brought all the important items up to speed and it only cost me around $900.00 all up via an independent mechanic.

As already stated you gotta sort out your priorities :)

Most non-dealership service mechanics don't use genuine parts if aftermarket ones are available. This is a further cost saving to you. In my last car of 10 years ownership and over 200,000kms of hard driving it only ever used aftermarket consumable parts such as Ryco filters, Gates timing belts and never had a problem and I saved hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

My first [RS Turbo] lib was sold on to a mate of mine and he just clocked over 300,000k's and always had non genuine parts used for servicing. If they iuse a reputable aftermarket product you shouldn't have any issues.

As said, sort your springs later - otherwise I guess you may end up looking cool sitting in the driveway while you save for a new engine.

Why not get the Service done and Reg the car for 6mths and then insure it monthly until you can afford the full 12mths to spread the cost out a bit and get away from the Christmas money hassle. Be aware that monthly insurance can be disheartening come claim time from what I have heard so look into it fully, you could also look into Fire & Theft only cover or Third Party Damage only etc too as a means of spreading the cost until you have the funds to insure it for 12mths, don't discount a Personal Loan to get your Rego & Insurance spread out to take the weight off paying them both at once, ask your parents for financial advice too.

There are way and means you just need to weigh up the consequences that if something does happen to your car accident wise, and don't disregard some other idiot running into you instead of the other way around, what is acceptable to you.

I hope I have given some info to help allay some of your fears.

Your timing belt isnt gonna snap at 100,000Ks mate.
Its only a recommendation, so that preventive maintenance gets done.

try this: rev the car, and listen for slipping of the belt, [your revs will flutter], you will also find your car wont perform like it should, and you use more fuel.

Buy a belt from repco, [GATES] and get an outside mechanic to install it.. all up i paid $350

and yes i hear all this shit that subaru belts are pre-tentioned, and u should only use there belts.. ALL BULLSHIT!
and as for the warranty.. if your cars done 100,000ks SUBARU will wipe there hands anyways.
