Metal = attracts and retains engine bay heat. Also replacing that pipe with anything else deletes the small resonator chamber which will affect Helmholtz tuning of the intake.

I couldnt be stuffed welding the two together.
problem is, if you take the air box right out, it leaves a massive hole in the inner guard. I think that looks crap.

so i've attached just a 45degree elbow to the intake box with the filter on the end of it.

I'll eventually get a saw and cut the elbows to keep the standard airbox there.

Digging up an old thread, but i'm interested in doing this simple mod. Mainly for cosmetics :)
Just wondering if anyone knows the pipe diameter for an MY07 2.5i ? I measured but not 100% on what I got, inches is confusing lol.. I know its slightly bigger than 3" on the external measure..

Does removing the resonator if the pipe is replaced actually have any affect? (especially on a stock car)
If so, would any re-tuning be necessary?

I thought I would add what I did to my car when I first got it. This mod is long gone as I am now supercharged + intercooled, but from memory it was a nice little mod. It made quite a big difference to the engine noise (without the resonator boxes to dull the intake noise). I simply used some heat wrap on the metal tubing and even after a hard drive, the metal way ALWAYS cold. It is suseptible to minor "heat soak" if you are e.g. stuck in traffic

I logged a slight gain in top-end power that was significantly improved through tuning. Tuning is the way to get the most from an intake mod. For those chasing power and responsiveness, a tune is your best option. Also a lightweight crank pulley kit will make your engine feel sharper, almost like you've removed weight from the car.

Pulling this thread back from the dead. Had a look through the forums and couldn't find anything that was a straight buy and replace part that was not ludicrously priced. Came across this thread and it worked a treat!! Looks good, sounds a slight bit better but it seems to feel a little bit driving too. Seems to rev slightly freer. Cheers mate

Adding power makes you faster on the straights, while subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere.
