Aweful Fuel Economy

Postby wassell2381 » Fri Apr 17, 2009 10:57 pm

Hey guys
ive had my 04 liberty for a couple of weeks now and have been getting really bad fuel economy!

I filled it up last week and it only got me 312km from 60L and was driving it pretty sedately. The average is always sitting between 4 and 6km/l on the dashboard, which is crap. Even my old Prado used to get more then that!

Has anybody had any trouble with any of the sensors on their cars? I was perhaps thinking it might be the oxygen sensor that is playing up but i dont know

Give us a yell if any1 has any details or advice

Cheers
Dan

Mate - I know nothing about the NA 2.5, but that economy is shite!! I'm down to 9.6l/100km for 2.5Turbo!!!

Hopefully someone on here will know the answer otherwise I'd be making a headline straight to dealer for serious checkup!!

Goodluck, oh and Welcome!!

Whoa that's not cool... even with crazy driving my fuel consumption never tops 10.2L/100km. And I have a 2005 2.5 N/A, so should be practically the same

im gonna take it to melville subaru on monday and see if they can sort it out? i just dont wanna pay through the nose for repairs to different parts that might not even be the causes. Ive heard that some people have had repairs done but they weren't guaranteed to fix the original prob.

not that I am saying the Liberty has a decent fuel consumption (not at all); but I normally manage 9L/100km with a mixed highway/city trip!
not everything is as it seems!

i never knew it could get any worse!!
I completely filled the tank with BP Premium today and did about 70kms around the place. It was averaging 9.3 when i got home which was fab compared!!

I went to go get some milk tonight and the average is sitting on 2.2km/L I decided to take it for a run on the freeway and it only came upto 2.7km/L

Im beginning to think i bought a lemon

im gonna get the RAC to check it out tomoz
ive got to get a diagnostic done on it

Air flow meeter could be covered with crap. check the o2 sensor as well. the car is running to rich so something is throwing off the computer. disconecting the battery for abot 10 min will reset the computer.
Thanks,
Jon

cheers man
The problem was fixed a couple of weeks back. It worked out to be dirty fuel. I was filling up at the same servo with caltex ultimate and it was a dud! They flushed and lubricated the whole fuel system and now its working better. Still only averaging 7.9 city km/l but its still better than 2.5km/l. Ive been told to only put premium unleaded in from BP or Shell because others arent as good quality.

Im just filling up with BP regular now because i havnt noticed any better performance and economy with BP Premium although im paying 15cents more.

I had a couple of bad tanks of Vortex in the bike a few years ago and vowed I'd never use it again if I could avoid it.

I do mostly metro short-trips and just clocked 370KLM with 70 KLM left according to Trip Computer. I use the SportsShift 99% and use Normal ULP and only fill-up on PREMIUM every 3rd tank full or when going on road-trips.

I ignore Avg fuel for my city driving as my trips are too short, but out on the open raod I can get 7.4L/100.. Current metro/short trips is about 11.2L/100. which is not great on paper.

yea tru. So do you change up manually using tiptronic? Coz the autos rev a lot when its left to do its own thing. Mine will easily rev out to 5000 rpm before changing. Anyways Im just getting to the point where i ignore the info display all together. When the display even works that is lol. I thinks it a loose connection (but that's off topic)
Im hoping to give the car a run down to Harvey in the next couple of weeks so ill see how it averages are then.

Matey, I change up and down as if I'm driving a real manual. It's at least 1 gear short and a 5 speed would have been better. From 2004 VW had the DSG (dual clutch auto) with 6 speed and new VW's have the 7speed now. One area Subaru needs to get with the times! My car has just clocked 6,000 k's so it's still abit tight.
