Rebuilt motor (head gaskets were leaking), now no spark

Postby Gyro10 » Sat Mar 12, 2022 5:45 pm

I suspect earthing since I am not sure where they all go.
Main earth to starter motor bolt, check.
Body earth on left side goes to where?
Body earth on right side goes to where?

There is also a light grey 3 pin plug at the back of the inlet manifold wiring loom that goes where?
I have connected the two main loom connections plus the 2 gearbox and the O2 sensor.
The coil pack is plugged in, the TPS and ISC.

No spark...

Ideas?

Thanks.

Use the FSM to confirm your grounds. (FSM link in my signature)

Iirc the straps from the heads to the frame rails are important, below the engine.

Do you have voltage at the injectors with the key on?

I assume it cranks over ok?

Cranks fine.
Do the injectors get +12 pulses to open, or is one side always +12 with key on?
I shall measure them this afternoon.
I do know no spark, from connecting a ht lead to another plug resting against the head, nothing when cranked.

Without looking at the schematic, injectors have 12v with key on and ecu switches the ground

Use a test light with an incandescent globe (not LED) rather than a multimeter to test for 12v at the injectors. The test light will draw current, unlike the multimeter.

Injectors have 11.7V, battery is 12.5V
Both the radiator fans come on too, AC is off.
Something is not right.

Crankshaft position sensor has static resistance of 2K ohms.

Photos of the earths, the cam sensor, the crankshaft sensor, the grey plug that I can't find a place for.

So it’s an 02…

Is it GX sohc 2.0l , RX sohc 2.5l or B4 dohc 2.0 twin turbo?

Is the three pin plug for the front O2 sensor?
This is from the engine removal section of the 98 FSM.

Rocker covers suggest SOHC and I can see a '5' behind the oil press switch.

Im going with SOHC 2.5

Unplugged?

EDIT: Spec is 1-4K ohm, so right on the money.

See FSM links above lol.

I’d start with going through engine removal in reverse order, eg engine install.

Then look for no start diagnostics in that section of electronics.

Its great bedtime reading zzzzz :P

SOHC 2.5

It is my stepson's car so I am not totally familiar with it. Do both fans come on with the ignition?

I already have the O2 plugged in, a white plug with a white socket. I can't see a grey socket for this plug - is there another O2?

I need to dig up (wire) a test lamp, but 11.7 seems low.

Yes crank sensor unplugged for that measurement.

Which section has the diagnostics?
