Used 2009 MY10 Liberty 2.5i

Hey everyone,

Just purchased a 2009 MY10 Subaru Liberty 2.5i sedan which has full service history mostly at a Subaru dealership until very recently.
I want to do an oil and filter change first thing and have a receipt for the last oil change with the previous owner using HPR 5 5W40 fully synthetic, which I believe you would need to use fully synthetic from the beginning?
Do Subaru service centres normally use a fully synthetic from the beginning for these engines? Should I call the dealership and will they be able to provide the info?

Also, could anyone recommend a good oil to use for this car? It's a manual and has 110,000km on the clock.

Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about what oil has been used so far. Pick an oil that meets your requirements (some trial and error may be involved) and stick with that.

Castrol Edge is a popular full synthetic in a few different grades. It is regularly on special, which is handy. Check model-specific recommendations but anything from 5w30 to 10w40 is likely to be fine.

Beware that "oil choice" is a massive rabbit-hole of internet opinions and half-understood science. For your car regular changes of a good synthetic oil and filter (eg 5000kms, or perhaps longer depending on usage) are going to be more important than selecting the so-called "best oil" according to internet opinion.

Personally I use Penrite "Ten Tenths" 10W40 oil, but that is for a turbocharged engine running on E85. Probably expensive and excessive to requirements for a 2.5i.

I also recommend:

(a) the Fumoto oil drain tap (save on oil change mess and consumable washers); and

(b) the longer oil filter from an FB25 engine

(both pictured below) but now we are getting into the territory of "tossers on the internet with opinions". Enjoy the new car.

Thanks so much for the help and suggestions.

I've done the oil change, changed panel air filter, cleaned MAF and checked everything I can see. I'm having an issue with low idle, sitting at around 2-300rpm on the guage and can't work out what it is. Does this car have a MAP sensor also and where would it be located? Apart from that, what else could it be? It drives fine but when come to a stop it feels like it's just above stalling, and I've noticed at times the idle when I depress the clutch remains high around 2000rpm like it's stuck.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Have you checked the Neutral Switch?
My 2003 XS Forester blew a couple during the time I owned it, each this was the indicator for the problem.
