mods for 07 2.5 auto

Posts specific to the 2.5 litre NA engine

Unless they've changed it in the MY07 with the 2.5i... and maybe it's different with the GT.

I can use my auto 'boxin four modes: I will call these modes "full-auto", "auto override", "sport" and "full manual".

Full-auto: self explanatory. Step on the accelerator and brake, let the car do the gears. Don't touch steering wheel controls. Computer is smart, human is dumb.

Auto override: as above, but you can change gears with steering wheel controls. It will go back to full-auto if you have light throttle on, and will shift before redline.

Sport: Similar to full-auto, but it shifts at a higher rpm and gear kickdown is two gears, not one.

Full manual: Start off in Sport, and then change gears. Sport light should turn off. It drives as close to a manual as you can. It will stay in the gear you assign it, and it *does* hit rev limiter and will not change gears for you.

Yeah see.. when I drove auto, we didn't have this fancy tip tronic stuff :p

I had

P-R-N-D-(3?)-2-1

I had a 3 spd auto in my neon.. if i held it in the gear.. it would stay in the gear... regardless and just bounce of red till i moved it, this is what I was thinking how your auto's would work even if it was in sporshift/tip-tronic or whatever mode..

I'm pretty sure that in the Merc I drove around and even in the Holdens that it was the same concept, even with the sportshift/tiptronic capabilities.

They must've come a long way if they are able to help you shift up to avoid hitting red etc if you were holding it in gear or attempting. I know it varies a bit differently if it's in full auto mode and you shift to change it, it just drops back to the gear it thinks it should be in etc.. but in the full sportshift/tiptronic it should hold it in..

Just like a holden, hit the eco button and wee it revs higher :p

I'm just amazed and curious as to how autos work etc.

In the end, I still love my manual as it offers full control. Even if i'm tired, shifting doesn't matter. The only time it would be a pain in the arse to drive a manual is if i've stuffed up my left (shifting) hand or my left foot (clutch), that's when it really starts to hurt..

Actually, I recall VS Commodores, you can 'lock' it in gear and it will still shift... :P silly Holdens

lol, the difference is, when you push the gearstick(or wateva its called) to the right, the sport sign lights up. However, this does practically nothing, as the thing still shifts by itself and imo holds gears alot longer. I personally call it tiptronic only when you hit the gearstick upwards to activate the 'tiptronic' mode. In this mode, you can shift gears 'manually'. However, the thing still shifts itself when im just about to hit cutoff. ie when im flooring it on first gear all the way, the comp shifts it to second, alhough i didnt touch the gearstick. Compare this to the accord euro, where i can i-vtec first gear and it will stay at cutoff till the comp works out after 1 or 2 seconds, thats its cutoff and shifts. and adrian, dont talk unless you got an auto.hahahha 8)

whats the number of gears gotta do with being on p's? anyway, gearing of the 4 speed is annoying... gears arent short enuf since the engine is neither powerful or torquey - they should put at least one more ratio to allow us to keep the revvs up. should've just used to 5AT off the GT - prob saves development/manufacturing costs - wat n00bs. anyway, wouldnt want a s15, got the liberty cuz of AWD anyway... suspension could be firmer tho - rocks like a boat. lmao

The gearboxes are rumoured to be built by Prodrive - is this true?

More gears doesn't mean better... it's just efficiency..

If you had a manual.. 7/8 gears would be a pain in the arse..

Most times I'll go first gear to redline and shift all the way to 4th or 5th.. lol

or 2nd and so forth up to 5th..

I don't use 6th gear unless i'm doing 100km/h faster as a rule of thumb.. or it's a smooth long road that's a 90km zone.. then i might shift to 6th.

I'll pull around in 1st gear in traffic if i'm bored and 2nd..

If im any slower than 60km/h I generally won't even be in 5th gear, unless it's smooth rolling and a 50km zone, I might leave it in 5th..

but that's just me..

More gears in an auto works well I think, helps to make them more fuel efficient, since a manual > autos in fuel efficiency and control..

Even trucks man.. have stacks of gears.. first lo-hi, 2nd lo-hi, 3rd lo-hi etc.. full kudos to those people who can pull that off on a daily basis in big semi's man.. some of the best drivers around in manouvering etc..

oh oh, and the fact they can reverse into a loading dock, WITHOUT reverse parking sensors, and know exactly how far they are away from the dock... THAT, is VERY impressive!!

Parking sensors are damn helpful.

Considering reverse parking sensors cost me $250 painted, fitted and installed, and a respray of my rear bar would cost more than that alone... I think that pays for itself already :P
