Thermostat housing hitting manifold

Postby brucey1 » Sat Jun 30, 2018 11:29 am

I've got a leak from the thermostat housing that has melted on the exhaust manifold. I got a replacement thermostat housing but it wont fit because of the manifold. I'm not sure if the water pump has been changed or a different exhaust manifold has been installed from stock.

What needs to be changed, water pump or manifold?
Liberty sedan 2004 engine EJ252.

Asked around and I've been told a Forester engine has been installed in the Liberty at some stage. The exhaust manifolds are different. Looks like the Forester water pump has the thermostat housing on the bottom, whereas the Liberty has it towards the front. Here is the new water pump:

Also got the metal thermostat housing to suit, which points in the right direction to clear the exhaust manifold. Water pump part number is WP3067. There is a water pump for turbo engines with the same thermostat housing position but has more inlet/outlets.

I was going to install the water pump but I'm stuck on trying to get the crank shaft pulley off. I broke my ratchet. Tried a few methods holding the pulley with a chain wrench but it started to dent the grooves in the pulley. Seems like it has been over torqued. Might have to take it to the garage.

Like, you have the incorrect water pump.

You have an EJ251 type engine or water pump with and EJ25 type exhaust manifold.
Like, the two do not go together?
Cheers!

Not sure what engine version is in it. On the engine block it has EJ25. And on the build plate it has EJ252:

We have fitted EJ252 engines into Gen3 Libertys and EJ251 egines into Gen4s.
You need to make sure that all the sensors are chaged over, etc, to maintaing compatibility with the ECU.

HOWEVER, you have the water pump issue when doing the EJ251 into a Gen 4 exhaust.
EJ252 into a Gen3 = does not matter!
