engine shuts off

Postby Ruzty08 » Fri Aug 01, 2014 7:46 pm

Hey guys. First time poster, ive acquired a 2004 subaru liberty with abit over 200km.. I've had it for 2 weeks now. Everything has been great til today after an hours drive, turned off the car and waited to pick up my son from school. After 10secs of driving the car hesitates under acceleration and then dies. Happened to me on the way home also. Can someone please shed a light on what it could be.

Thanks

No warning or check engine light on?

Sometimes when you have a fuel problem you might get the light on letting you know the engine is running lean.

I can still hear it priming before I start the car. Going to buy a new battery first to see if its the problem. At least it will cancel it out. And clean the battery post as it looks to be correded

No engine light is on when it stalls. Scared the crap out of me because there were kids everywhere and I had no control of the car even at very low speeds.

Check the battery terminal clamps and connections too.

Replaced the battery. Cleaned the battery post. Let it idle and drove for about 45min. Everthing seems fine. Keeping an eye on it. Will get a multimeter to check volts on alternator. Hopefully nothing else goes wrong. Bought rola racks for my snowboards to take the lib.

Hey guys just a quick update. Looks like the battery isnt the culprit. Was working fine the whole day. Cane back to the car. Clicking over but no go

Did you check the alternator with a multimeter yet?
What is the brand and CCA of the battery?

When you say clicking over, does that mean the engine is cranking or do you actually just hear clicking?

All lights on dash still fine while cranking over?

Also one thing you might be able to do is have a look at the logbook and see if there was any work carried out recently that could have possibly been done wrong (like a fuel filter or pump change without using correct o rings).

Car is in a different location. So when I get there I will check it with the multimeter. All light and dash lights working. Its cranking but not turning over.

Do you mean turning over but not starting?

Well I found the culprit. A burnt out connector on the fuel pump. I'll post a pic when I get home. Does anyone know where I can get one of these?

A dealer might charge you for the whole assembly for that. Maybe check if a local subaru specialist has a spare connector around.

If you have an opportunity you may want to get a new pump just to keep it reliable. Dw65c fits like OEM but with better flow.

Make sure you're careful with your o ring size.

Not sure if your year had the in tank fuel filter, if so maybe change that as well. Repco were able to price match online for me.

Hey Surge, thanks so much for that. I would prefer to have someone that knows what they are doing to replace the fuel pump and possibly the connector also. I am mechanically minded but when fuel is involved, i rather have a pro do it for me.

Only thing is I don't know anywhere reputable to install it for me. I did have a great mechanic, John at V-sport who would help me with anything on my previous car (evo). But havent spoken to him in a couple of years.

Is there anyone around my area (blacktown, sydney) I can go to who is good and doesnt rip you off?

I also want to know as to why the connector would burn out? short circuit somewhere?

It's working right now but i want to fix it asap.

Here is the photo of the connector

If its that connector then maybe it is easy to get as just one spare part from Subaru.

The sti part number for a similar one is in this post:

I guess a dealer could tell you which one you need exactly and that shouldnt cost much. Would also be plug and play DIY I think.
