Changed throw out bearing now car WONT START.

Postby Leveleig » Sat Feb 01, 2014 5:38 pm

Hi everyone,

A little while ago the throw out bearing went in my liberty.

I bought a new clutch and bearing for it and put it in, all good(so I thought)

I went to start the car, turned ignition on and everything seemed normal. Then tried to start it and all the dash lights went out, then came back on but the odometer and fuel consumption screen where the clock is were all blank. The car never turned over.

I disconnected the battery for a few days, came back and tried again, but this time nothing at all happened and the screen just read err (error)

When doing the original work I did mistakenly forget to disconnect battery. The only other things disconnected were the main big plug to the computer for the engine, the ground from the battery bolted on with the starter, and the 2 plugs to the gearbox.

Any help will be appreciated as I have no car at the moment!!

Does it say Err HC on the cluster?

You need a code reader to be definitive, but sounds to me like an ecu grounding issue.

You said you disconnected ecu plug when you did this? Check the plug again. Also check the ecu earth wire that starts at the ecu plug and runs up under the dash bolted to the chassis/ firewall. Even if it "looks" ok, physically undo the bolt and re- secure it.

If these are all good, then you may have fried a fuse or even the ecu. Check it all out and see how you go.

Not simply a flat battery by any chance? When mine got flat enough it wouldn't even try to turn the motor over.

Good point actually. If battery charge is not sufficient then it wont allow biu to talk to the ecu so you will have a canbus communication error (Err HC - high speed canbus error)
