Upgrading Cams at the same time as timing belt?

Postby Surge » Tue Jan 28, 2014 6:30 pm

I've got a timing belt service coming up and I'm considering upgrading the cams and also changing the head gaskets to performance ones at the same time as I do the timing belt and water pump.

Does anyone know where to get the cams here in Australia?

I know the US have delta but I think the shipping would kill the idea due to cost.

Also any recommendation for the head gasket?
Mine doesn't need doing but if I have the engine torn apart I thought it made sense to change them.

I'll probably get a lightweight pulley at the same time.

Any advice?
Is there anything else that should be done while the engine is apart?

Where is the best place to source these parts?

Im not sure if doing a HG and cam while doing the timing belt will save you anything... they dont open the engine to do the timing belt. Just a HG alone installed is 3k.. add cams and a tune to that and youd be talking big money!

I'm no expert, but there's not really any point doing performance mods to a N/A engine..

Performance gains per dollar is extremely low.. Best thing you can do is put an exhaust on it, get it tuned and drive it..

Good point... if youre going to spend the sort of money you were talking, you could get a supercharger kit.

Already been tuned ;)

Cams on the 2.5i do make some gains but on an auto, most of it is lost in drivetrain loss

Performance HG on a 2.5i. Seems like lots of work for essentially nothing.

Thank you all for the replies.

I was thinking of doing the work myself and learning from it.
But considering that the lib is my only car and that cams are not easy to get, I think I will leave the 2.5i with an E85 tune and call it a day.

Possibly down the road I will pick up a second car (Toyota soarer?) to mess with on weekends.

Thats interesting.. I hadn't thought about E85 tunes on a 2.5i.
What sort of gains will you get with that?

I hope to be able to tell you in about a month ;)

Unless Matt would care to estimate?

I think I read that the H6 gets about 18% more power just from e85.

I would be happy with even 5-10% but I'll take as much power as I can get.

Yeah there is a point! u can make power if u spend the cash ur right that the bang for buck isn't the same as spending on a gt but u can still make gains. I have a 2.5i as well and I'm keeping it and I will be opening the motor at some point.

Car mods australia has cam kits you can buy for the ej25 but they are expensive

15% gain in peak power but the midrange torque is the big difference not to mention cheaper fuel. Canberra will have E85 at Fyshwick very soon as well!

I admire your passion and commitment. But it really makes no sense when you can just buy the turbo equivalent or h6 for the same / more power potential at less cost
