Advice: Engine Rebuild or New Car?

Hi,

Long time listener, infrequent caller.

My Liberty 2.5L (03/04 sports auto) has done its bottom end just before its 187k service. Has a lovely knock and a taste for oil. Before this it always serviced on or before the due time (usually before but never over), used good fuel etc.

I am after some advice on what to do.

My options are
A. Engine rebuild. Mechanic has a ballpark quote of $5500+ (is this good/bad/not bad?),
B. Getting a reconditioned motor to slot on. Who's the goto people for engines? (EJ25).
C. Trade in the car and get something on finance.

I am located on the Northern Beaches in Sydney

Thanks.

first question
Location....?

But I'd call Ben at Ichiban, organise another donk and install.
slot in a new waterpump, timing gear and maybe clutch while it's apart

Try Kris at Rising Sun Subaru or otherwise just some local wreckers.
or buy a complete wreck from the auctions

there's no way you'd dump $5k into a rebuild of a 2.5 NA

$1000 should get you a complete motor (no accessories)

I got a quote from SGS parts in Thornleigh for a motor with 104k on the dial installed for $3150ish (ish for a timing belt if required)

that's about a normal cost for a donk + transplant

What are peoples thoughts of engines from Rising Sun? I have a lead on a reconditioned engine from there.

Engine from Rising sun has been fitted by A&B Motorsports. Few small issues with the replacement, but its in. The engine runs smooth. The wallet needs counselling. Still a better love story than twilight.
