Whistling noise?

Postby renan_don18 » Tue May 07, 2013 3:44 pm

Hi guys,

I swear i saw this topic here once but i cant quite find it now.
I can hear a whistling noise coming from (what it seems like) the front wheels when i hit 60-65km/h but only when the windows are down.
At first i thought it was just wind going through the car or something but realised it gets a bit louder at higher speeds. So it's kind of embarrassing coz im not sure how loud it is to others.
Just had the clutch replaced a few months ago so im hoping its not that and doesn't really sound like my brakes.
I've been sort of looking and maybe its my wheel bearings? Anyone else might have ideas?
And if it is the bearings how much would they cost?

Thanks in advance.

-high pitched whistle?
-lower pitched wowowowowowowow noise?
-does it get better or worse if you swerve (gently) from side to side?
-more on one side or the other?
-does it get better or worse when turning hard, one direction or the other?

could just be wind/ road noise through tyres or alloy wheels

my bad, should have specified.

Yeah its like a high pitched whistle thats kind of constant. Kinda like wind but sounds a bit more aggressive (courser and louder) when i hit like 90km/h.
Doesn't change if i swerve side to side or anything.
Same sound with clutch engaged and disengaged, nor does it change according to my rpm. Just speed and is constant.

And i can only hear it mainly with my windows down so i can only really notice the front right. I can hear a bit from the left too but i rarely ride passenger or at the back of my own car hahah

quite possible it may be a wheel bearing from what you describe
could also be CV joint related
Also could be the brakes down to their wear indicators or rocks jammed in behind the dust covers.

I'd jack up that corner, pop the wheel off and have a good look at all your CV boots, inspect the hub area for signs of grease leaking out around the hub nut and driveshaft.
And see if there's anything in the brakes or anything left of the pads

Damn, hope its not the cv joints.
My pads seem okay, could do with replacement but i'm sure im barely at the wear indicators but true it could be stuff stuck in there somewhere.
And yeah getting some of the woowwoowoo sound a bit from the back but i think my tyres are just a bit noisy.
But I'll do that check today. Thanks for the help mate! much appreciated.
