Clutch/Flywheel Options

Hi guys !

So I know I've covered this here and there in other threads but want to keep it to just clutch/flywheel discussion.

I'm getting a flywheel conversion and clutch replacement done hopefully within 6 weeks. The place I'm going to said they were going to use a genuine subaru clutch etc for the conversion. A fellow member mention I should look at a Exedy HD clutch kit for the conversion. I found these 2 on ebay ..
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Exedy-Heavy-Duty-Clutch-Kit-inc-Flywheel-Subaru-Liberty-RX-Forester-Outback-EJ25-/330720848071?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d007fa8c7

Now I'm just wanting to check (because i'm not the most engine savvy person) that these 2 are viable options. My car is just a daily driver, so I'm wondering if the HD Kit would be unnessary for my needs and whether the standard Exedy Kit would be a better option ?

Please help ! =]

I wouldn't think a HD clutch would be all that necessary on an N/A Liberty. A couple mates have them in their falcadores and they do get kind of tiring stuck in traffic. I guess you will eventually get used to it. I would just stick with standard Duty clutch. Unless you want some extra credz down at the local car wash haha :P

As long as you have a solid mass flywheel, you should be ok.

@ C-Shell
I ran an Exedy HD clutch with a solid mass flywheel when my car was NA, I have to say that I much preferred the resistance of the HD over the SD, launching was waaay easier.

I had the DMF in my Forester swapped out for an OEM solid mass one last year and it made a helluva of a difference to the car.
The torque band seemed to moved to a lower spot, not by a huge amount but enough to be noticeable plus I can get further up hills on the road before having to change down a cog or two.
The change in the torque was confirmed by my mechanic he confirmed it would have lowered it a bit.

For a daily driver, which mine is, I can't see any reason for a HD clutch besides building up the muscle in your left leg.

It's only $100 more for the HD anyways :D

then it really comes down to personal preference. I will always prefer a HD, which is waay softer than the clutch my housemate's 98 Land Rover Discovery which I am currently driving. MOAR REZIZTANCE

Thanks for all the veiws guys.
I think I'm jsut gonna stick with the genuine with the warranty. Don't really need to run a HD clutch or anything so I'm not gonna branch out.
Good news too, Russell at Subaru Evolution is gonna do my exhaust at the same time as the Flywheel conversion, that way I'm not paying for any install on the exhaust, just the price of the system. $440 for a Mild Steel XForce Cat-back.

Hi guys, I just want your opinions on this... My clutch is on the way out, and I am going ahead and doing my research on getting a single mass flywheel conversion and new clutch. My mechanic has quoted me a price of $1920 for the conversion and clutch, and all parts and labour. They use a PBR clutch which from what I know is an Australian brand? Is that price reasonable?

Sorry for the noob question but want to know what suggestions you might have from those who have done the conversion or used a PBR product before.

Thanks again! All suggestions much appreciated.

I wouldn;t expect the kit to be more than $600-$700 and a max of 6 hours labour ($100 an hour)
seems pricey to me.
Note that PBR's Clutch division was also merged into Clutch Indudtries

Thanks Rob! Good to know... I'm assuming that the conversion from dual to single mass flywheel is also incorporated into that price...?

A good flywheel shouldn't be too hard to find or expensive, unless he's quoting on a brand new one from Subaru
And there's a whole lot less junk in the way on an NA compared to a turbo aswell

D-Chang, I was quoted $1550 for a clutch replacement and flywheel conversion, all with genuine Subaru parts.. So yea I'd say the, quote you got is a bit pricey !

Don't get a PBR one for that price. He's ripping you off. I work next to the old 'PBR' plant that went belly up. Get OEM, if not Exedy. Japanese QA on that stuff.
