Exhaust Heat Shield Rattle

Postby cooki_monsta » Tue Jan 29, 2013 9:27 am

Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I'm thinking about dropping off the rattling shields as the nuts and bolts have rusted anyway but I'm worried that the exhaust would start to rust if stones start pinging off it. Does anyone know what the material of the exhaust is? I'm guessing it's just mild steel. Cheers.

Hey CM,

Having the same problem/noise on my '06 Lib. Think i've narrowed the rattle down to a particilar heat shield section so will try a stainless steel hose clamp around it first (mentioned on older threads on this topic) to see if that stops the rattle.

When I changed my headers I had the chance to pull off the heat shielding and have a look underneath. It was very tight and the steel is tough from heat treatment. Underneath was VERY well protected comparred to the parts that weren't shielded, so I would definitely leave it on and tighten it somehow. +1 for ring clamp if your bolts are stuffed

Had this terribly in my old Forester. Once I got my exhaust it just overpowered the rattle though :) I had a go at removing them but those bolts were rusted on big time and some of them are a pain to get to. Definitely try a clamp though!

Thanks for the advice guys!

It turns out that upper heat shield around the first cat had actually cracked around the threading so even when I replaced the rusted nuts I still got rattle.

I had to drill the nuts off on the back cause the nuts didn't fit a 9 or 10 mm socket :(

The car has already done over 125,000 kms so it will be fine for another 125,000 kms without it :)

Now my car goes faster cause I shaved 200g off it's kerb weight haha

These heatshields always crack in that spot. I've seen them welded and still crack. When I had my gen4 I removed just the top one and replaced the bolts and nuts to still hold the lower heatshield in place.

^^ Mine also cracked in that area, and I had it welded. The weld has cracked twice. The first time wasn't a very reputable exhaust company, but the second was. They are happy to re-weld it free of charge but I just have not had the time to get down there! Seems a sensitive spot

I have that heat shield rattle as well mine has been welded by a reputable exhaust company as well but didn't last long tho it's very annoying I'm contemplating ripping it off it's that annoying its all I hear at low revs. It's also very embarrassing when u pull up at a maccas drive thru and it just rattles so loudly and echos as well !

Take it off mate. You don't need it anymore if you've already done 100,000 kms or more :D
