I wouldn't say its very common at all. Any engine will spit a bottom end bearing given the right conditions.

You don't give much info as to what was going on before the bearing went. Anything unusual like oil consumption, higher temps, engine noisier then usual? Do you change the oil regularly, 10k km or so? Do you use good oil, not crap from Woolies? Is is modified? do you warm it up/cool it down? Do you flog it? At over 100 000km you need to be maintaining your car a little more regularly. I change my oil every 5000ks to keep it fresh between servicing every 10k km.

I did the same on my NA 2.5i, lets just say it was costly!

Engine was chewing oil and was due for a service.. lets just say I've learned from that experience :P

What was the cause of your bearing problem? How many kms?

i hav a 08 spec.b with only 80,000km that spat a bottom end bearing, i was told it was due to wrong oil being used (i cant comment as i lack car mechanical skills)

i brought a new genuine bottom end off ebay from vic for $2000 del to my door, when i changed it out i found that it had less then 2ltrs of oil in it   :angry2:

and after further investigation it looks like in its previous life it had been flogged by a back yard bandit... lucky i got the car relativly cheap at the time :)

edit

sorry to hear your problems mate, it gutted me

I think I was just driving it too hard with not much oil, Had 120k.

Bought a second hand motor with 80k on it for about 2k and installed for around $700.

My GT spun its bearing with the previous owner. Low k's for its age and serviced only at the dealer it was purchased from. Spat it at 100k

u guys are probably not going to beleive this. but i did my bottom end bearing 6 months ago . and yesturday i did it again after getting it fixed by doing and engine rebuild for 5k. i dont want to do another engine rebuild.

i bought the car for 15k 7months back and blew it at 130k kms. after doing the rebuild i did 10k kms then blew it again.

how much u reckon i could sell it for now, as is? without doing another rebuild?

Wow, so im not the only one....

My bottom end bearing went 2 weeks ago with only 85,000 kms on the clock. And im 80% sure that it was due to the wrong oil being used.

This frustrated me so much, im in the middle of an engine swap at the moment.

Sorry to hear, but evidently your not alone in this :(
