Noise inside cabin

Postby Turbo Lag » Sun Dec 09, 2012 3:33 pm

A 2.5i manual MY04 I'm looking at purchasing makes a noise which sounds like a droney hum with vibration from where the transmission tunnel is inside the cabin. It doesn't happen in first or second, but starts to become louder in third and progressively more in higher gears/speed. Sound is more towards the rear end of the cabin and can't really be heard from outside. Car has done about 153xxx kms and I'm not sure if the clutch has been changed or not, but the clutch feels fine to drive. Is it a problem to do with the dual-mass setup or something else?

Very well could be... I'm honestly not sure at all. Will the centre differential cost a lot to get replaced (I'm guessing it will be fairly expensive)? I'm getting a Repco inspection done but the car is still at a dealer and I've not given any deposit on the car itself so I can still back out at any stage.

Those kinds of inspections won't really give you any indication for something like a diff. if it was a rear CV joint then you would be able to tell, but usually that will make noise at low speed so I doubt it's that.

Like a constant hum? Happens with clutch in aswell? Does it get worse if you steer slightly to one side? Could be wheel bearing.

Doesn't happen with clutch engaged, can't remember honestly if the steering made a difference, and the constant hum starts in third and continually increases as speed does. Going to drive it again very soon this week so I'll report back again.

It's at Repco right now on the hoist, turns out yes, it was a wheel bearing. Has to be fixed under RWC anyway apparently, thanks! 8)
