Engine sound.

Postby sedstrSTI » Mon Feb 27, 2012 5:54 pm

hey guys need some input here if possible,

got this flapping like sound coming from the engine...oil light flashed whilst I noticed it, so I topped up the oil straight away

does anyone know what it could be?

EDIT: Realised I should have posted this in 2.5i specific, Ric feel free to move it if needed

Could be tappets, valve clearances, or if unlucky, big end, but sounds more of a taper noise than a big end knock.

I am not very mechanically knowledgable (and I highly recommend getting a second opinion), but it sounds a little like rod knock when you rev it. Still pretty quiet though.
I got this plan. It's called 'Save Ass'. And the way it works is this - I slip outta one of these windows and I run like a bastard!

The knocking isnt consistent enough to be something terminal.

Although usually when the oil light comes on your in trouble. If i were you, i would drop the oil ( or whats left of it ) and do a full oil flush, change and filter.

You can do this yourself for about $60 at supercheap and only an hour or so of your time.

What viscosity is the oil, and when was it last changed?

Turns out it was what I feared, a big end knock according to my mechanic, will be getting it checked out by a local subaru specialist soon.
The car was due for a service this week, oil was changed at the last service (10,000- november) K's ago as I rack up a lot of km's to and from work/uni. I checked the oil last week and everything seemed fine was low but not empty, don't know what went wrong. The oil viscosity was 10w-30 or 10w-40.

Oil did get changed over again in the service today, I go by the book with services with my mechanic...

Hmm that sucks mate, usually a big end knock is a bit noiser than that. Perhaps its just started to overcook a bearing.

Unfortunately its just one of those things that happens. All it can take is a bit of sludge to block up a gallery on a journal and sometimes thats enough.

I had a nasty one a few months into owning my old Legacy.

Is your car still under warranty? If your lucky enough, talk to the suits at Subaru. If they can see you have had a good service history and always followed by the book, they may cover some of the cost of repair or offer to replace the engine on the house.

See how you go, hopefully it comes good!

Cheers guys,
The video probably wasn't the best. Unfortunately the car isn't under warranty. Don't know what I'll do yet, will speak to a few people tomorrow... get a few quotes etc.

I understand that i can still drive around without the risk of getting stranded but the knocking might get worse, how true is this?

Devastated, car was running like a dream, never missed a beat.

Just for reference for others, from what has been said on this forum. Our dash lights are worthless for reading low oil, and if the light ever comes on it's already too late and the damage has been done.

sounds like excuse to replace insides with forged pistons, rods, decompress, replace all with good bearings add a raptor n get tuned!

Seriously, that suxs if no warning and it's a bearing.

You don't always need to replace the engine, normally you can just replace the bearings and a vrs kit and it'll be sweet. For 9 grand you must have gotten a new long motor? (heads and block assembled)
