Newbie first post - My MY04 Liberty 2.5i bought new has 186,000 kms, this week I can hear a vibration sound from the engine bay as the car slows down to stop. The noise seems to stop after a few seconds and can't be heard as you drive but as you slow down for traffic lights the vibration sound can be heard (but not always). Took the car for a drive then came home and tried to pinpoint the sound. Standing in front of the car the vibration sound can be heard from the left side down low in the engine? Need to rev to make the vibration start, but not always able to recreate the sound. Appreciate any advice or recommendations, thanks in advance.

What kind of vibration? Is it a deep solid sound of a thin tinny sound. Deep and solid could be an engine mount or the dogbone, tinny sound could be heat shields.

I could possibly be the hydraulic tensioner.

You said you had it from new, so I assume you have the reciepts for the 100,000km service? Did they replace, or make a note about the hydraulic tensioner? anywhere from about 100,000km+ they tend to start weaping and lose they're tension a bit, this causes the tensioner to vibrate against the engine block and can cause a rattle sound.

Is it at a certain RPM? It could be the exhaust heat shields rattling.

The top heat shield on the catalytic converter is a common problem on these, often cracks after about 65,000kms. If so just remove it, a new one will do the same in due time.

Yep both of my cat shields cracked where the bolt holes are (that hold the two halves of the shield together).

Rather than remove them I used stainless steel wormgear straps wrapped around the two halves, then tightened the strap enough that the pressure stopped the rattling. Has held up over a year now.

+1 for heat shield.

I had a damn vibration that was really loud at certain revs and especially when i open the throttle then let the revs drop. took it to the mechanic, and yep, heat shield rattle.

Really appreciate the replies from everyone. This has given me the ideas to start researching and check the vibration issue.
All I can say is THANK YOU and I'll be back.
