Starting Up Issue - Please Help

Hi,

Hopefully someone can give me some insight to a problem with my Lib.

A few weeks ago I went to start the car, it wouldn't start and seemed like a battery problem. It attempted to start but just wouldn't turn over. My dad said it might just be dirty battery terminals (they were pretty dirty) so we disconnected the battery, cleaned up them and reconnected the battery and the car started. The next day I got my battery tested and it came up as fine.

Now tonight the same thing happened at work. It just wouldn't turn over. I disconnected the battery and then reconnected it and then it started.

I have no idea what the issue is but, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery seems to fix it (for now).

Any ideas?

Thanks
Luke.

Do you have an aftermarket immobiliser installed?

Nope, unless it was a previous owner and I don't know about it!

Do you notice anything else strange happening with the accessories on?
Put your highbeams on next time it happens and see if your radio turns off.
I know you said you got your battery tested but you never know....

Happened to me the other day lol

The accessories seem fine, except only one globe which flickers (but you think it would be all globes if this happens). It's one of the sun visor mirror globes. I'll give the highbeams thing a try. I really think its the battery, but yeh it tested fine and only happens occasionally.

I'm thinking maybe the battery terminals need a clean with proper cleaning products made for battery terminals, or that protectant stuff.

What happened with yours? Just a dead battery?

if it's the original battery (or more than a couple off years old), it's probably on its way out.

I'm not sure how old it is, but it has been in since I bought it (2008), and its branded RACV (which I know from work are crap) so its a replacement and some stage of the life of the car.

I'm just worried I buy another battery and its not the problem. Would a battery on its way out start the car again after being disconnected and reconnected, and then even work a few weeks without fault before doing it again?

That being said, I have resigned from my job so I got only a few weeks left with which I can get a Century battery for cost price :P

Long story, but a wire from a HID fog kit kept coming out (replaced under warranty now by the god of lights LEO) and I left my lights on without the car running for about 15 minutes to try and get them going, compounded by the fact I had had my radio on for about 6 hours that day when I cleaned the car / installed stuff on it.

So from now on I don't put my keys in my car unless it's to be driven

My accessories appeared to be working correctly, until I tried to use multiple ones.

Have CD player going then turn on fog lights, cd player turns off....Have fog lights on, then turn on low beams, fog lights turn off.
Was so weird that the battery was that low yet it could still reproduce the Xenon low beam light perfectly without faltering, yet it couldn't turn on the damn car.
I just charged it overnight and it's fine now.

Well it happened twice in the last week and a guy at work checked it out and said the battery is way too small for the car, and probably on its way out. I always thought that clamp didn't look like a quality fit... haha. So I got a new Century Hi-Performance cheap through work, hopefully it'll be all good now.

It's been over a week, so I suppose changing to the new battery fixed your problem?

Yep got myself a Century through work and had no problems since. Except I did have two dreams that my car still wouldn't start so it must still be on my mind :D haha

Like i said in the other thread regarding Start-Up issues, my car has been doing a similar thing. Nothing wrong with my accessories though, and no problems with my lights/fog lights/anything. So doesn't seem to be a battery problem to me. I might charge my battery overnight tonight and just see what happens though. Can't hurt! :)
