Information on Extractors

Postby Fourlex » Sun Sep 16, 2012 8:51 pm

Just curious, as I'm a stupid teen. But nevertheless I'm wondering whether extractors are worth it? Do they void your warrantee, how many power do they increase your car by, is it worth getting them on a stock 2.5i?

Any information is helpful, cheers guys.
One of the youngens, so play nice.

no

straight up answer
sure you would get some more power with them, high flow cats, aftermarket catback exhaust and a tune
but its not really worth it cost-wise
plus dont even think anyone makes them for 2.5i..? sure you can get custom ones but just dont bother with the whole idea mate

I think XFORCE make a set for the 2.5i

I run XFORCE on my Impreza 2.5 and they are a good thing, however the car needed them as it has SC so a lot more flow

For stock I wouldnt bother much, but if you did, go the whole hog and get a XRT or KiDo tune to top it off and make a real difference

Take the full cost of headers, cats, exhaust and install (my x-force wasn't quite direct fit, cat needed changing) and your around $2,000 on a good day...plus tuning if u want that too. Also your ECU must be Denso (or it'll be a pain in the butt, can't tune hitachi) so if your ECU is Denso then I would save money and plan a supercharger build. Non-inter cooled by Raptor SC start quite cheap compared to others.

Then with boost running, any exhaust mods you do will yield far greater results :D If your ECU is hitachi then you might be stuck with a cat-back exhaust as your only easy option I think...

I was quoted $2500 recently for custom headers, full exhaust system and a stainless steel catalytic converter and install.

I have no idea if this is a good price. Someone please shed some light of you like :)

** The idea was to get this in conjunction with a Vipec/hydra interceptor kit installed and dyno-tuned... I was told power gains of 20-25 kW at the wheels... Does anyone know if this is realistic on an NA?
Quote came to $4200 overall which kills my life. Surely someone knows of something a little better price wise? :)

Ok, if you are even considering spending $4200 for 20-25 kW, I would NOT do it. Basic tuning (if u have a Denso ecu) gave me a 10% power/torque increase that made the car so nice to drive, and SO much more responsive and will cost you under $1000 including the cable you need to buy. I know there are other tuners but I went through XRT by west_minist and was very impressed.
From there, if your aim is power, contact Tradewind on this forum and he will give you some more info on prices (I would say he is very well priced). Now if you go a stage 1 non-inter cooled supercharger: it will open the door to stage 2 & 3 as I'm exploring (there are a couple of supercharger builds in "2.5 NA engine specific" topic). I've opened the door with a stage 1 intercooled supercharger that send me from 108kW atw (98kW stock before tuning) up to 155kW with torque from 191nm (172nm stock before tuning) up to 250nm.
Then like I said previously; if you then get an exhaust it will yield big power gains. If more power is your aim; don't do what I did and waste your time and money trying to get power with cold air intakes, exhausts, lightweight pulleys etc because the car just won't respond anything like it does to tuning and supercharging :D

I just fitted a Xforce cat back with high flow cat & noticed a nice difference in torque & acceleration. Far better than stock. All gear pulls are much more powerful. I fitted my self and saved heaps of coinage. :D Cost me around $650 all up.

/sorry for hijacking thread OP :)

I wouldn't say I'm 'considering' spending that much, just relaying what I was quoted (which I agree is pricey for the 'benefit)

Unlucky for me I'm part of the Hitachi clan which limits tuning capabilities. I don't want an excessively powerful car, just something that is 'nicer to drive' like you've mentioned I'd get from a tune.

What's your fuel consumption like in stage 1? I'm also mindful of trying to maintain/improve fuel usage too (hitch I guess why I haven't considered anything like you're doing) :)

Nice work, x-force cat-back is bolt on easy enough but I never found a cat to match...but then I wasn't looking hard lol. When I fitted my cat-back+high flow cat found the x-force 2.25inch to be restrictive similar to stock, or because the stock headers were still a choke point...either way just bolting on made more noise but didn't give my car any real gain. Hey HyRax, your tuning was identical to mine (same model, results). I have exhaust so if your running stock it should show a nice comparison to my NA results with 2.25inch x-force+cat
I'm not sure on hitachi, I'm pretty sure it's unsupported for tuning at the moment...

Hmmm... I can definitely feel a difference over stock.
Well my stock Y pipe snapped so, my theory with cars = always replace broken stock parts with better after market ones or refurbish where I can :) I actually kind of like it, because it means I get to buy stuff & the Mrs can't complain.
