Camshaft Knock?

Postby Stano71 » Tue May 11, 2021 11:27 am

Hi all , I recently picked up a 2006 Liberty BL5 Auto (EJ204 quad cam) with an engine noise that sounds like big end knock on cold start , as it warms up the noise gets quieter, disabling cylinders individually makes no difference at all to the noise... with the car in gear the noise is almost gone until you rev the engine ...
It sounds loudest around the power steering pump bracket area ..
I replaced the cambelt and tensioner (full Dayco kit) but in the process I found that the Drivers side inlet AND exhaust camshafts seem to have excess endfloat (endplay) that can be moved by hand to create a loud knock similar to what I'm experiencing.... Videos show what I've found and pic shows endplay specs from the factory service manual ...

Any subaru mechanics here seen this or anyone else know if this is common .... Its only on the drivers side cams , the passenger side does not do it on either engine.... Does anyone think it could be the cause of this knock?

I got a another low km motor from a wreckers and it has the same thing but ONLY on the drivers side Inlet cam (not the Exhaust cam)
Both engines have no play on the passenger side camshafts at all.
Anyone willing to pull the drivers cover and check for play on their non noisy engine ?
Would appreciate any input , cheers
