Interesting and timely for me, I'm due for a set of 4 new tyres in the next 3 months and seeing as I'm up for the 4 and have an unused spare, I'm thinking in a tight-arsed fashion that maybe I can get 3 only and use the spare as a 4th.

I guess the next stage is to check for signs of cracking etc as per the pics in the 1st linked article.

Mind you, the overall age is less than 5 years so hoepfully things are OK and I can only blow $1300 on 3 new tyres as opposed to $1700+ for 4

(I'm just going to go ahead and get RE050as, they seem to be the best even though pricey and considering the 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' axiom, I should be better off going with the OEMs)
Now that I'm in North America, I'm greatly concerned about raised pick-up trucks and owners of wedge shaped vehicles. Seriously, not only do you have to be concerned about one hitting you in an accident, they stand a good chance of driving over you at the same time!

Best to do this anyway, otherwise the spare is just getting older and less useful.

Deal!

Let me know particulars closer to the date and I'll take it off your hands.

The Europeans now have noise ratings that must be published for tyres. Go here:-

http://www.blackcircles.com/general/tyre-labelling

then On the right hand side fill in your required tyre sizes and search. Each tyre will show noise rating as well as wet grip and economy - not quite sure what this last one means.

This is interesting, just checked the sound ratings for two of my sets (identical size, both sets new and on almost identical rims).

http://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/h ... e=14227772

http://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/b ... e=30212959

Both have the same 70dB rating but the Hankooks are definitely quieter... Although both are pretty good as the 70dB indicates.
