Just for information.

ECU plug end confirms connection with a blue LED on the plug - very helpful. Took a reasonable amount of force to get proper engagement.

Vista downloaded a more recent driver which worked immediately.

All in all - much better than $200 odd.

Oh - the 90 degree cable is well over $50 delivered from the US ATM. Too much $.

Well Im happy to report I succussfully flashed my MY04 GT ECU tonight using the VAG-COM cable. After humming and harring whether to attempt it - I did it at my mates workshop with the tactrix 1.3M cable as a backup if the flash went wrong.... and well it didn't.

Using ECU Flash 1.42, the fore mentioned driver, windows XP SP2 worked a treat. Test wrote first, worked fine, so did a full write. And now I have the timing backed off to bring the IAM back to 1.0 where it should be! :)

Lee,

Good detail here, thanks. I got my new notebook a couple of weeks ago (dedicated for tuning), got the VAG-COM cable and will attempt to connect this arvo. I will update after success/failure.

Kind Regards,

Mark.

Well..... I have double checked the config of my notebook/driver etc, but cannot connect as the "protocol" selection pop-up in ECUFlash returns an error message. I am not sure of the cause and I have tried 3 different available protocols from the pop-up list, but none are successful so far.

Maybe I need an updated list for ECUFlash? Any advice welcome.

Kind Regards,

Mark.

Clive,

Not sure how much of the car uses CANBUS comms interface. I thought the ECU on the MY04-MY06 (Pre-Facelift) did not utilise CANBUS. As I look through the Electrical Section of the USDM Workshop Manual, some elements of my vehicle use it and others do not.

In the MY07-MY09 models, more extensive use of the CANBUS is built into the Electical Systems of the car. For the MY04-MY06, I thought it should work. Further investigation across this weekend.

I don't have any experience with a car of your age, it seems reasonable that it should work. I do remember reading though that the cable you & I bought don't work on anything as late as mine.

For some reason I assumed yours was an 08.

Will be interesting to hear how it works out for you.

Guys, tried to connect again today, following the process as laid out in the 1st post from Hotwire. I did get some good initial signs as follows:

1. Blue light on the OBDII port connector on the VAG-COM cable
2. Comm3 configured at 4800 bps, 8 data bits, No parity, 1 stop bit, No Flow Control
3. When ignition turned to the ON position, heard fan cycling
4. ECUFlash started and Read ECU was selectable

Then things did not look so good:
4. NO indication of "ErHC" in the oddometer :(
5. Selected several likely vehicle groups from the popup list, 2004 through to 2006 with LGT and even the Non-USDM range. There are a total of 3 in the list that "may" work with my vehicle. I tried each of them.

Always the same ERROR in the ECUFlash log, Could not connect, Interface closed.

My vehicle is an Oct 2004 build ADM Liberty 3.0R 5AT. It is NA (no turbo) 6 cyl and has the Internal ROM number D2ZY101H. I did note that this ROM number does not appear in the configuration files for Liberty in ECUFlash.

Any clues as to why I cannot read my ECU ROM Image?

So you can't even read the ECU using ECUFlash?
Can you connect using Learning View or Rom Raider to view/log the ECU? (note you should NOT have the green connectors connected for this, simply normal vechicle with igition on for LV or running for RomRaider)
This will indicate if its a driver related issue, or ECUFlash issue.

Also what version of ECU Flash do you have?

Lee,

Installed LV tonight and tried to connect without success. One of the test connectors was disconnected at the time (driver's side, the passenger side one I leave connected). I consistently got the same error:

ERROR
ECU ID of 3C5A44006 not found
Your ECU is currently not supported

I did note in the LV log that some bytes (hex) were sent and received (I am guessing this is the ECU ID)

I also tried the Romraider again (with the test connectors joined) and still no connection, but the ECU was in read and write mode (due to the fan cycling).

Version of ECUflash is 1.42.2595 (2009/06/26)

Any other suggestions? How can I isolate if the cable/driver is the issue?

Kind Regards,

Mark.

Well it sounds like your ECU is not supported by Romraider/LearningView which makes is pretty much impossible to tune the car without the definition created for your ECU ID. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Why do I get the error message “ECU Definition Not Found” when I try to open my ROM?Typically this means that your ROM revision is not supported by RomRaider or the ECU definitions are not installed. Make sure you are using the latest ECU definitions.

If you have a stock, unmodified ROM, you can ask for support for your ROM from the community by posting a copy in the ECU and Logger Definitions sub-forum at the RomRaider site.

Lee, thanks for that. Saves me trying to connect until I can obtain the definition files. Not sure how long that will take but I will give it a shot.

Have had another think about this...
With both connectors connected you should still be able to read it via ECUFlash - regardless of whether your ROM is supported by Romraider/LV OR ECUFlash. Basically you car should be able to be read by ECU Flash, but you just wont have any editable tables. To be able to be read however, the green connectors must be connected in the footwell as well as the ones on the drivers side. Note I never touched the connectors on the drivers side as they are connected from factory in my GT. However, ensure both are connected.

So when you start up ECU Flash, I presume you can see the icons coloured for read/test write/write etc? When clicking read, use the STI04 read method (this is the one I use) as it is for the 32 bit ECU's of that vintage.

Also which OS are you using? and did you use the FTDI driver listed prior OR are the tactrix drivers installed?
