well this is shit... gmail wont allow me to send an executable.

BUT

after a quick google search, download any old version from evoscan site here:
http://www.evoscan.com/free-ecu-rom-downloads

about 1/3 down the page there are version 1.24 to the current available for download.

Pin 4 - Chassis Ground
Pin 5 - Signal Ground
Pin 7 - ISO 9141-2 K Line
Pin 16 - Battery Power
which is the communication for reading/flashing etc. So looks like your shelling out for a new cable.

hmmmm,

I'm pretty sure that my cable does have 4 pin connections on the OBD plug. the SSM1 plug does only have 3
I'll have a look at what pins are connected and see

EDIT:
checked the cable
it has pins in 4,5,12,13

ah well, i'll just fork out teh $20 or VagCom

just tried again

tried different drivers, different versions of ecu flash, always came up with the same error.

I rekon there's something wrong with my car.
Even when i bought the throttle controller, it never used to work, it always cut the throttle on me.

Heres some screen dumps

Your driver looks fine, cable is showing up correctly in the device manager, but in ECUFlash it looks a little strange.
in the lower RHS, you can see FT232R....... In ECUFlash I simply see USB <-> Serial
This may be some sort of hint? Perhaps try uninstalling all drivers, and remove the device (uninstall).
Start the install again.

Other than that, as suggested find someone with a genuine Tactrix cable & their own laptop on your car to rule out your car. Or see if you can read any other subaru of the same vintage? (DBW ecu)

meh bugger it, lets keep going and try to work this out.

now:

i noticed the driver i download from the link in this first post has been updated, could be an issue right?

so what i did, was look for the specific driver you mentioned (from legacygt) and found a site that had a copy so i downloaded that and intalled it.

Could well be a driver issue i am having.

are you able to post a link or email me the driver you are using? that way i can eliminate that as being an issue.

if that still doesnt work i really dont know where to go from there"?

Sorry I missed that last post.
I'll check when i get home tonight. I'm now running windows 7 and unsure which driver is installed TBH as I use the tactrix. BUT I'll see if I can get the VAG-COM to read the wifes liberty tonight using Win7 and whatever driver.

Howdy ho everyone, i've been having problems getting any connection at all with my obd2 cable. I've followed every step in this forum, read through all the comments but can't find anything helpful. I currently have a usb obd2 cable - elm327 and a bluetooth one, neither work. I'm using a program called PCMSCAN to simply monitor engine rpm etc but can't get any connection what so ever. I have tried various other programs too. I've installed the drivers suited to subaru, changed the baud rate etc, the program detects the adapter but fails to establish connection to the ecu. The green test connectors are connected under the steering wheel and the thermo's are cycling on and off. I'm thinking it could be that the car isn't new enough, as it is a 2001 liberty rx. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Pretty certain ELM327 doesnt support SSM therefore it's not going to support any data transfer with your ECU. The reason the cheaper VAG-COM cables work, is (as long you buy the right one) they have the FTDI chipset - which is what the tactrix cables use. These allow SSM data transfer (on the k-line from memory?) so sorry to say.. buy a new cable
