Noticed something I've never noticed before.......

The front bumper on the drivers side has a removable section.
....

Yep. As mentioned, that is where the tow hook screws in. There really is some useful information in the owners manual. ;)

Oh..... let me find my owners manual and read the whole thing till I find the section on towing and removable panels...

On second thoughts I'll just post it instead.

By the way, where's the attachment on a specB?

It's called the contents page or index ;)

On the Spec.B, the black foglight surround easily pops out you'll find the exact same hole to screw in the tow hook.

That would apply if I already knew it was for the tow hook, in which case I wouldnt have posted.

Anyway, thanks to all those with useful input. :good:

Does anyone know the exact diameter of hose/pipe needed to fit snugly over the airbox intake flange? I read near the start of this post that its 73mm but is that internal or external diameter?

Just be aware, before you start ripping off resonators that their primary purpose is to improve air intake flow by removing harmonic pressure waves in the intake that bounce back from closing valves, well at least in NA engines. The side effect is to quiet the intake down too but that's because the air flow is smoother and more even.

See here: http://planetsoarer.com/resonator/resonator.html
This has links to some other articles and a nice animation to show the effect.

The author tried replacing his stock, "restrictive" intake and resonator with a bigger PVC pipe job and lost power, but gained noise.

It's all a bit counter-intuitive but there is real science behind this sort of stuff!

With a turbo, I'm not sure it's so critical owing to the longer intake path and positive boost up the rpms where you make power but you have to wonder at the purpose of the "milk bottle" inside the air box entrance.

Doesn't seem to make a difference in my NA (noise or power).

I'm leaving it off, but that's because I'm too lazy to put the milk bottle back on.

I wish there was some definative proof that it either should be on or off, maybe someone who has access to a dyno can do a test with and without.

I will say that I trust the science posted above, I just don't think it has a large enough effect that someone could notice.

Reviving an old thread

I'm considering doing the resonator delete for more sound, but don't want to compromise power.

Wondering how many with the 2.5T have done this and are happy with results? Also considering swapping to a Cosworth panel filter from stock.

Have done it to both my 2.5 GT & previously my H6. No discernible difference in power to my bum dyno.
In theory is shouldn't loose any power as it's on the pre air filter side of the airbox anyways. So it's essentially just a 2nd intake hole for the airbox.

I noticed a touch more induction noise, and you can hear the stock BOV more on throttle closing in the GT.
On the H6 is made a decent induction roar for a stock airbox.

Cheers, so would you recommend it? And did you cover your inlet to block the resonator's function, or actually remove the 'milk bottle'?
I believe the latter requires removal of front bumper and is a much bigger job?

Nope just removed the milk bottle.
I've actually got the HKS snorkel that replaces the milk bottle giving an extra intake.

It's not difficult. Either remove the whole airbox, or go from underneath.
This thread has the walk through on removing it.

i know this thread is very old but hopefully people are still looking at it.

i just removed the milk bottle from my 3.0r and now it's throwing codes P0102 and P0113, did anybody else get codes? should i put it back on? if not the resonator what could have caused it?

note i havent driven it without yet i just started the engine and the codes were there.

Removing this will achieve nothing but negative effects on power delivery, especially low rpm torque and produce more noise.

I think most young fellas think the noise is cool so they convince themselves it makes power too.

When tuning motorcycles we always made the biggest airbox we can possibly fit in the small space available between the frame and petrol tank, removing this is effectively making the air box smaller, the bigger volume of the air the intake pulse has to draw from the better.

These sorts of debates always rage on on forums between engineers and blokes who think they are making more power.

I had a totally stock airbox with a Cosworth Dry Panel filter, and I thought it was doing a good job until I had my used Engine Oil tested. The analysis showed excessive Silica (Dust) after only 3700km since the last oil change. That could be because the filter isn't doing a good enough job. I couldn't find any intake leaks that could cause that.
I live in a regional city, but I don't drive on dirt roads, so I don't think my conditions would be causing that issue. And anyway, that's the job of the filter.

If you're interested, my next Oil analysis will be in a few months, and I've changed back to a stock filter. So I can tell you definitively if the Cosworth filter was the cause of the dust in the engine oil.
