DIY: Replace Cabin Filter

Detailed descriptions of how to do things to your Liberty.

2004 Liberty. As I had to get a new aircon cabin filter, I checked out Ebay. As I didn't have an original to go by(see previous post), I measured the tray size and came up with a filter that was about 8.5" square x about 0.75" high. That seems to be the same as a Toyota Prius or Camry (Lexus).
$6.99AUD delivered to my door in just under 3 weeks from HK. Just arrived, well wrapped and sealed like a new motor part, and although it's a bit flimsy (remember I don't know what they are supposed to look like) it fits perfectly. Seller is "ZSJLADYSHOP" and sells a couple of sizes of these.

Another happy customer here.

I really don't think my filter was ever changed in the past 8 years/150,000k's!!

Defiantly worth replacing. No amount of cleaning would have gotten my old one to smell good

Bought a Blitz one from PhatGT. As mentioned in this thread there are definitely other options, but the Blitz one is re-washable (apparently) and cheaper than the OEM Subaru one.

As Hamish said, cleaning is not an option it will never be the same.

Mine was that jam packed with sh!t that I doubt it'd even be the same shape after a good wash :P

Replaced mine today with a Blitz from Phat.

Not as dirty as some, but not that clean either.

Blue to bottom, foam on back and front. Hope that's right!

Car has done 67,000km and full service history by Subaru, I guess changing/checking the cabin filter isn't on their list?

Did you have a look at your service history receipts, only to find they charged for a replacement at some stage... I know my Mazda had it done at it's 50k service...

Seems that should be replaced at 45k service as per

Personally I check at about 40,000km intervals as I find it doesn't build up much crap in a short period of time. Obviously it depends on your driving conditions and how often you have the heater/ac on though.

But no, Subaru doesn't have a schedule for the cabin filter.
Built not bought, it's a way of life.

Cheers for the DIY guide, made it an easy change over. Did it in bout 15 minutes today. Old filter was filthy and aircon is much better now!
Replacement filter was Ryco and $47 bucks from Supacheap Auto.
Once again, nice work with the detailed walkthrough, we need more of these!

This write up is great. Very helpful...
I took mine out just to check the damage and it was filthy.
Ordered one off ebay (TY Brand) all up it cost me around $16.
Hopefully its a half decent one, I read some good reviews on amazon.

Just a quick question, what year did Subaru started putting the cabin filters into their models ????

Did the early models, say Gen 1 have them.

I would say that they would all have them.. There would have to be some sort of filter! Otherwise the blower would get filled with crap?
