Subaru Transponder Chips Information

Postby conkyd » Mon Oct 31, 2011 12:54 pm

Hi guys,

I wanted to share a cheap solution to this issue. I recently bought a MY07 Spec.B, and at the time of picking up the car the owner said that the second key needed a new battery... silly me for believing. Long story short - there was no transponder chip in it.

I didn't want to spend the $375 Subaru quoted for a new key as they wont sell the chip by itself and i already had a key cut with working remote. I couldn't get any auto electricians to touch it either.

After much research, the chip I needed was a 4D-62, found one on Ebay in Hong Kong. $15 including postage, fitted it this morning and took the key to Subaru who have now re-programmed it for free.

For those who are interested the seller was newkeys2010

Very happy, and saved $360!

I am pretty sure it is a 4D-62 also. This chip was used for most Impreza, Foresters and Libertys from 04-09. My mates 05 Forester XT has a 4d-62 also. The earlier Foresters have it embedded within the moulding so you cannot access it.

Open your working remote and have a look, you should see one of these;

On my liberty key (traingle shaped), you open the side cover so you can access the battery, then slide the plastic cover that is closest to the actual key. That will reveal the transponder which slides out.

Let me know what you find?

Ok so I've pulled it out.
The chip is the same shape but the numbers stamped on it are different.
In big letters it's M8X10
Then In lower case b-05328

Are these completely different chips or are that just like batch numbers?

i have just checked the one i bought from Hong Kong and it reads B-05240.

i will check my original one tonight, but i think that it is a batch number, rather than model. Texas Crypto are the ones who designed the actual transponder chip for Subaru and most other manufacturers use them, or under licence. that is where 4D-62 comes from, it is their model number.

4D-62 is Subaru, 4D-63 used by Mitsubishi etc.

So my original one has b-05296 6821

Looks like a batch number.

Also - when you go to Subaru to get it programmed, don't say you bought it online. Tell them you bought it from a wreckers!

Best bet is to open the key and have a look....

Found this reference to it being a 4D-62 also;

http://www.transponderisland.com/2008-2 ... gory_id=77

however that is for a US Legacy. They can be different to Australian delivered Libertys.

Have you cracked your key open? It's easy to do... there is a big square black thing, which I assume is it... mine has

1024
091130VD

on it.

there is also a tiny silver thing with

43392
EA9YP

433.92 is a frequency used by transponders...

I should add the key is a bit more complex than the old ones...

This is very interesting thanks. I recently purchased a MY04GT and it only came with one key, so I'm going to buy this item from ebay as it is only a bit over $43 with shipping and is from Brisbane.

Presumably a competent lock smith will have the capability of programming the transponder for me and I'd imagine that isn't going to cost more than $20-30 so I should be well ahead of having to pay $375 for an official Subaru key.
