It's almost ski season, so it's time to look at how to fit snow chains onto your car.
Chains should be fitted to the front wheels on all-wheel-drive vehicles.
When you buy a new set, it is a very good idea to try installing them for the first time at home, when it's warm and sunny, rather than on a mountain road when it's wet and dark!
First, make sure you have the correct size for your wheel and tyre size.
In the KONIG range:
215/45/17 require size 090, 215/45/18 require size 095
You can check other tyre sizes here:
Unpack the chains,
then spread them out and make sure they are not tied up in knots...
(and make sure the green metal hook isn't caught on anything. This caught me out the first time...)
Pass the yellow end of the blue cord around behind the tyre.
(It doesn't matter if you go from front to back, or back to front.)
Then lift both ends of the blue cord above the tyre and hook them together.
Link the green hook onto the green chain,
then lift the whole thing up and back, so the blue cord sits behind the tyre, and the blue chains sits at the same height in front of it.
Make sure it is sitting evenly, then pass the yellow cord though the red ratchet.
Pull it tight, then join it to the yellow bungee cord from the other side.
Here is how the chain should be centrally located over the tyre.
