Fitting snow chains

Postby Ric » Fri Oct 13, 2006 8:09 pm

It's almost ski season, so it's time to look at how to fit snow chains onto your car.
Chains should be fitted to the front wheels on all-wheel-drive vehicles.
When you buy a new set, it is a very good idea to try installing them for the first time at home, when it's warm and sunny, rather than on a mountain road when it's wet and dark! ;)

First, make sure you have the correct size for your wheel and tyre size.

In the KONIG range:
215/45/17 require size 090, 215/45/18 require size 095
You can check other tyre sizes here:

Unpack the chains,

then spread them out and make sure they are not tied up in knots...
(and make sure the green metal hook isn't caught on anything. This caught me out the first time...)
Image

Pass the yellow end of the blue cord around behind the tyre.
(It doesn't matter if you go from front to back, or back to front.)
Image

Then lift both ends of the blue cord above the tyre and hook them together.
Image

Link the green hook onto the green chain,
Image

then lift the whole thing up and back, so the blue cord sits behind the tyre, and the blue chains sits at the same height in front of it.
Make sure it is sitting evenly, then pass the yellow cord though the red ratchet.

Pull it tight, then join it to the yellow bungee cord from the other side.

Here is how the chain should be centrally located over the tyre.

LOL Ric

Suby's dont need snow chains! I have owned and driven five diff suby's in the the USA previously and lived in Lake Tahoe California - think 10,000 ft above sea level and 25 ski resorts around the bowl. The resorts buy subys for this reason. winter tyres might be a good purchase or even studded snow tyres if you good get them but NO CHAINS for god sake. Nice pics just the same.

cheers Dave

nice Ric, now you need to do a video of a burnout with the chains on the road.

It's a legal requirement. The Victorian Alpine resorts will not allow you to stay overnight if you're not carrying a suitable set of chains. I haven't had to actually fit chains for about 10 years (and that was when I was up at Mt Buller before the season started, and there was an unexpected 30cm dump overnight.)

Went to Mt Hotham last yr and was told needed snow chains by law.

Can definately say, it saved me life/mate's life/car.

I was only doing 10kms - 15kms @ 7am in the morning.

Just remember only use chains when absolutely necessary. The number of people I see driving round here with chains on and 20ks from anything that even resembles snow on the road is astounding.

Chains aside, the most important thing to remember when driving in the snow is just take it easy. Accelerate and brake smoothly and leave plenty of room between you and the car ahead. AWD cars are great but can lull the driver into a false sense of confidence where he drives like he would on a dry road. The snow isn't going anywhere, well not for another 10 years or so, so there's no need to race to/from the resorts. I've lost count of the near misses I've seen because people are in such a hurry up here. So take it easy and if anyone os in the Jindabyne/Thredbo area this winter let me know and we can hook up for a beer/ski.

You might want to consider putting the stock wheels back on before heading up to the snow.

Thank you! :ok:
Might stick to the other car if I want to go to the snow though.

We've already had a fair dump, about 10cms above 1600m so the ground is nice and wet and getting colder. We're expecting another good fall early May and from then on it's supposed to be all go. CSIRO are saying we should expect colder than average temps and higher than normal precipitation this winter. Summer has been cool and wet with average temps down a fair bit. All-in-all it's shaping up to be a better than average season.
