As some of you know, I'm one of the 3.0R owners with excessive oil consumption.
Subaru Australia decided to do a "short motor" swap on my car under warranty to fix it, so it went in last Friday.

($4,400 if you want to buy one as a spare part, plus $900 for the "gasket kit" in the thin box on top.)

The loan car was the white Forester, not the black GTB

Both heads have now been bolted on


There's around 200 bolts to tension up on the front of the engine




This is Elliot, who's doing the reassembly. It's a three day training course at Docklands to learn to strip down and rebuild the engine.

Are they letting you keep the old short block?

No, I'd imagine it's going back to Subaru to try to see what went wrong.

Spewing, could have been a nice base for a monster!

I like how the box is marked "fragile" judging by the number of rebuilds Subaru have done those block are indeed very fragile.

Update: I asked what is happening to the old block, and was advised that it will be held in "quarantine" for three months, and then destroyed.
Apparently this is Subaru policy for any parts replaced under warranty.

I'll be given an official letter, with the old and new engine numbers, which I have to take to VicRoads to get my registration updated.

But what the hell is a company like Suburu doing building a new engine in the middle of a workshop floor with workshop manual, tools and parts scattered all over the floor??? I strongly disagree with Suburu's method of engine building.

This engine should be built in an engine building room away from all airborne debris (eg sand, dirt etc) and contaminants. Even a grain of sand in a big end bearing cap can result in failure.

You should consider raising this issue with Suburu.

Well it is just a "short motor" swap, so the crank and all the bearings are sealed inside the block. Any dust that manages to get into oil or water channels will be flushed through as soon as they start it.
That said, I must say the workshop at Glen Waverley is one of the cleanest I have ever been in!

It's meant to be ready tonight, but I may defer picking it up until tomorrow.
The first 50 km's are crucial for running in, and if I got it tonight, the first 40 would be stop-start peak hour traffic through the city

I picked up the car this morning.
It was ready yesterday, but peak hour friday night traffic through Melbourne wasn't my idea of the ideal "running-in" conditions.
All is sweet so far. It's sooooo much nicer to drive than the loan Forester

How many times have you checked the oil so far?

I think this sort of experience could create an OCD in a man!
