Here's an example of a 'well executed' black car that I'm happy with.

I've also seen very good results using a diffused flash on it's lowest "test" setting
But it does depend on what background you have to work with.

yeah dark coloured cars are a pain in the butt. i still have to sort out a good way of lighting cars that I'm happy with.
also don't do what i do and wear white shoes if you think you may accidentally light up your feet
i myself like to use a higher ISO than mitch but my camera is a bit better at handling higher ISO setting. i like to go about 600ish - depends if you want a back ground or not and how much you are lighting the car.
here are a few examples:

or maybe not just for cars?:

Wow Jack, awesome shots again. I still love that GT86 pic.

Tonight I am going to be doing some shots in an industrial area (at request) of a light metallic blue colour.

It has some background light (street lights/security lights from buildings) but will also be pretty dark.

Would you suggest a long exposure or trying to run a higher ISO?

To make sure I don't have a over exposed long exposure, obviously ISO would be as low as I can go (100) and a shorter time (5-15 seconds) is what I would do?

Also, dumb question (I am VERY new to this lol) AE lock - on or off?

Thanks again guys :D

I'm in the process of buying some light diffusing material from the USA for my LED worklight so I can use them for automotive photography. At the moment the lights "rake" across the surface. Can't wait until i can get the stuff, but they're not making it easy at all. I have to call them.

cheers kody!
yeah a low ISO would be better if there is light in the background as you may get too much flare.
best to just experiment with the exposure. every photo/situation is different and requires adjusting. start at 30sec i say cause that will be much easier to light the subject up. given you want most of the car in focus a low F stop is not ideal. id try f/8 - ISO100 - 30sec. that will be a basic platform. adjust accordingly from there

You did ok on mine, even though it was getting condensation on the roof as you worked :)

Some awesome pics here!

I've noticed though, whenever I try to have my lights on when I do long exposures, it obviously flares ridiculously. How do you stop that?

Have someone sit in the car and quickly flick the lights on and off in a matter of like 1-2 seconds.
