Hey, does anyone know of a reputable repair shop that fixes lenses located in the Inner West, Sydney? I have a Nikon D5000 (derp) with a G series 18-55mm which the A-F motor in the lens broke, i think due to someone fiddling around with the focus lens whilst in A-F mode. Also what ball park figure am i looking at? If it costs more than a new lens or if its something unreasonable, i think i might sell it off and convert to Canon. Stupid Nikon with their G series lens.

Only place I know of is Ted's camera's. Or Georges Cameras on george street.

G series 18-55mm repair would be more than the lens is worth .Look around for a Nikon 18-70 should pick one up for $200 best bang for bucks lens around

Why change camps just because you stuffed up a lens

18-55 is a kit lens. You could prob buy a new one for ~$120, cheaper than any shop will charge you to repair one.

I wouldn't call that a Nikon stuff up cos most of canons lenses would be 'G type' as well...use the camera to adjust the aperture next time

The 18-55 is a very versatile lens but it's poor quality always let me down. The 18-70 kit lens is actually much better and would be a wise investment over getting your lens repaired. You can always take it directly to Nikon?

Haha, yeah. I should have done more research. I was going to buy the d40? d60? which was in my price range until i found out then were discontinued and i dont know who stuffed it up.. might have been when my mates borrowed the camera. I also remember lending my Wii out only to have it returned with a missing panel for the controller ports, might explain why my camera was broken. Most of my photography mates own Canons and they share lenses and afaik all canon lenses are compatible? i thought it might be better that way.

Depending what you shoot, i live and die by my 30mm and 50mm fixed lenses. 1.8f. gives you so many options

Yeah I agree. I loooove my f1.4 50mm but I do lots of landscape. It's not ideal for it! And full frame wide angles are so fickin expensive

At a guess, i'd say it would cost $65-$100.00 to have it looked at.... By that time, you could purchase a new version of the 18-55 II for $120.00
The 18-70 is not bad, i'd say the 18-105VR which is the standard kit lens on the D7000 is also an option at around $300.00. All depends on what you shoot.

50mm is pretty good if you panno, otherwise the 17-40's not too expensive

I am so fucking dumb. I had set the AF to AF-M in the camera settings.. i realised this after I ordered a 18-55 kit lens off ebay, luckily the seller let me return it for a 5% re-stock fee. Lesson learnt!
