Thought I'd give light painting a try... turns out quite well. I will try it again with a softbox.

Nice shots!.. Love how in the second one you've picked up the perfect crease that travels the full length of the Gen IV, just above the door handles!!.. Sexy lines!

Oh, and pardon the ignorance, but whats "light painting" and "soft box" ??

no idea what light painting, but soft box.. is that like a big box, with white perspex across the front.. filled with globes inside..?

I use a 30D with 24-70mm f/2.8L glass.

Light painting is where I have a long exposure and physically walk around the car, 'painting' highlights as I go along. It's theoretically the same technique they use for photographing classic cars to give it that 'showroom shine' in the dark, except a] their car is actually shinier than mine, and b] they have a softbox!

which leads - a softbox is a 'box' which 'softens' the light, by spreading the same light output over a larger area. This will diffuse the light - the difference between 2pm sunlight and a cloudy day, the latter being that your shadows are not as hard because the light is softer.

Long exposure and walking around the car, painting in highlights??.. Is this a similar principle to a HDR image? under and over exposed images to bring out a true representation?

And where exactly does a softbox go?

that lens is awesome clarence, a bit heavy but all good, Karen and I tried it on our 400d once. really good. at the moment using Tamron 2.8 lens and playing around with a friend's 24-105 1:4L IS lens, not bad.

No, it's not HDR - try this if you have the time:

set your camera in a dark room at an object, and set it on a long exposure, say, 10 seconds, at f/4 (the lower the f-stop, the more sensitive the light will be - try it and see), and use a flashlight to 'paint' the object with light, and look at the resulting photos. This way you can actually give your object a LOT of three-dimensionality because the camera will capture the light reflection from the object, and also capture the angle that you can now control.

The softbox will need to be a handheld one - I am yet to make a DIY one, looking for the right bits to use but haven't found one yet! It will just soften the light and give me more of that classy, smooth look. I'm due to take some more photos, once I get my 'aero guards' for the Lib then I'll be back for more photos

yes, definitely very very heavy... 950g worth of lens alone!! add a 30D, and a 580EX to the end of it, it really does take some muscles to carry it
