I recently bought a Nikon D90 with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses. Got to test it out on the weekend for the first time and ended up with these two that I liked.

Next up is a 105mm macro.

Any tips would be appreciated.

That Cockatoo shot has a blue cast to it - looks like your white balance is off. Did you happen to shoot RAW? While you can fix the jpg that comes out of the camera, fixing it in RAW before creating the jpg will not degrade image quality in the way that editing a jpg can. Nice composition of the cocky and pleasing isolation of the subject from the background. That lens does a pretty good job of the background blur too. Was it the 55-200?

I like the city scape though I think Mrs Macquaries Chair isn't the best spot (just my opinion) only because of the trees in the foreground. Trees aside, a slightly shorter exposure would have improved it I think as, to me, I think a lot of the building lights are blown out a bit. All subjective comments though so salt in quantities according to your tastes should be applied

Thanks for the comments guys, and good observations Smythie. It was shot in RAW and slightly adjusted using the Nikon software, as it was low light(the 55-200 isn't too good with a bit of darkness) Colour blindness contributed to the blue tinge in editing. Didn't even realise that haha :D

I went to a few different locations in the city, Mrs Macquaries Chair being the last. A 20 second exposure was used and seemed to come out better than the others, even though the lights became blown out as you said.

Cheers.

question on long exposures....when taking a long exposure of say a waterfall during the day. how do i stop the image from being a total white blur...ive tried stepping down the exposure and closing the aperture but anything longer than a few seconds results in a white blur

Neutral Density filters are your best bet if you want to smooth the flow of the water and maintain a proper exposure. Get the best you can afford. You might find that you have problems with auto focus with a dark filter on the lens, if so, either focus manually or take the filter off, get the AF to do its thing then change to MF and take the shot once the filter(s) is/are back on

I don't think you need to spend big bucks on an ND filter. After all, it's not like a CPL (which has very controlled properties) or a UV filter (which needs to have as little light loss as possible).

The best you can do then is to stop it down as far as you can (f/11 or f/16) and use the lowest ISO you have available (50 or 100). Depending on the amount of light you have to work with you may not be able to drag the shutter sufficiently
