subnub's noob photographer thread

I'm not a particularly experienced photographer and have pretty much learned through trial and error, with some ideas based on the work of people far more knowledgeable than I thrown into the mix just to confuse me haha. That said I do really enjoy it, and looking through the pics you've taken throughout the day and finding a few diamonds in the rough is a good feeling

Anyway I'll start with a couple of basic ones. These were originally posted in response to a question about longer shutter openings.

A few from New Years 2007-08...




And the same kind of thing from a hotel balcony in Cairns...


Some lightning shots, I have heaps of these, I love storms. The first one blurred because my missus grabbed my shoulder to say "ooh that will be a good one!!!"... while the shutter was still open lol






I also have quite a few car photos but they're nearly all Skylines, not sure how you guys will respond if I post them up

Oh yeah forgot about that lol

It's a Canon 400D with the twin lens kit (18-55mm and 75-300mm non-IS lenses) and a tripod. For the storm pics I generally use a 5 sec opening and the 18-55 lens, any more of an opening and there was too much light bleeding into the backgrounds or, during particularly active storms, lightning would drown out other lightning.

I haven't used them in these photos but I also have a prime 50mm f/1.8 lens and a 430EX Speedlite, both are great for taking shots of people among other things. Oh and I sometimes use one of those 11ty billion candle power torches for when part of a staged shot needs lighting up and the flash won't cut it, haha

Thanks mate Not sure how long he was there for, I was taking shots in and around where he was for a good 5 minutes though! It was Cavill Ave on New Years so I'm guessing he was there all night.

Mad pics, Storms are awesome especially when you get mad shots like that well done ^^, Depending on what year skyline it is, I dont mind them.

Nice Nice I love the New Yrs City shot and the Storm shots! Something about them makes them interesting.

I want to post my newbie pics of the city shots but i cant say what the settings are as i have no idea what each thing does (400D with standard lens).

Night photography is such a learning curve, the more shots you take the better the results. Thank goodness for digital!

Yeah thanks for the kind comments guys but i really cant take any credit. I dont know anything about my camera settings and just took them on P mode or something? Haha can you tell im a noob!

Didnt have a tripod but sat it on the window seating sill thing in the Shangri La Hotel. Lets just say it was a expensive photo for the missus as that was our room view. LOL!

Dont know if these are hi res as the originals sizing seems to be resized automatically by photobucket, but here is the link:

Haha that's ok mate, you're not alone, my camera seems to do a pretty good job of making up for my lack of talent too, maybe it's a 400D thing

It is definitely worth learning what the settings do though, the best thing about digitals is that it costs you nothing to experiment I just wish I had more of an eye for this kind of thing!

Sydney's lights are awesome IMO. Have done the centrepoint tower a couple of times and the light display from up there blows my mind everytime

Nice, Phil! A bit of Photoshop to whiten those lights and it'll be perfect!
