Bit of a blast from the past...

I've been eying off the LX3 since I started this thread, and after many many months waiting for it's apparent successor I am pretty sure it won't be out in any available quantity until end of the year. The LX3 has also hit rock bottom in price, down to low $500s now from high $600s back in August.

I ordered a new one as part of a package with lens adapter and 58mm fisheye lens. I considered the Panasonic G1 as well (it doesn't do video though), GF1 (too expensive plus it doesn't have IS), Canon S90 (fixed aspect ratio) So the LX3 met all criteria which was compact size, good selection of lens available, HD video so I can use it as an in car camera, bright sensor, and lots of manual settings available.

Perhaps next time round I can pick up an SLR, but this one should give me a good start into creative photography :)

Within limits, the lens counts more than the body in the final results. IMHO the 18-55 is very cheap, and it shows. See how little it can cost to buy stand alone, that will tell you. Pick a Body that has the minimum features you REALLY need, then get the best lens you can afford. When you can afford to move up the scale in body cost, the lens will come along (while you stay with one make). We started with a 350D, 18-55. Then got a 70-300....then a 24-105L (~$1200). Then moved to a 40d (MUCH better body!!!, not much more $ than a 450D).Now have a 7D , and moving lenses around as needed, as they will fit all the bodies.
And another thing , check out the series of progs on photography on ABC2 lately - some are still on iview- last 3 sundays at 19:30.Some excellent stuff.

my 2c worth anyway.

The original EF-S 18-55 did have its shortcomings. The IS version of the last couple of years or so however was a big step forward and is good value for money, particularly for beginners. There have been many fantastic shots taken with the 18-55IS. Otherwise, I agree completely with your suggestions.

A good flash (and taking the time to learn to use it) is also very good value in your kit.
