JiP's MY03 Gen 3 RX LPG Wagon *Uber*

Postby JiP » Fri May 29, 2015 11:48 pm

Hi guys, thought I might post a few pics and the story behind my 2003 Gen 3 wagon.

I bought it second hand in 2009 and have owned it for the past 6 years. She is currently starting to look and feel a bit tired, but am planning on bringing her back to life.

Here are some pics of when I first bought it home...

After a little while I started making improvements. Here they are in order...

Alarm system, as the car came with one key, and I lost the buttons to the remote. I was quoted around $470.00 for a new key through Subaru, but opted for an alarm system instead.

Next I raised the car as I was bottoming out on driveways and speedbumps. Plus I wanted a higher ride height for when I go away camping. I know going up isn't everyones cup of tea, but that's exactly what I wanted of my car.

I increased the tyre profile which gave me an extra 5cms and I installed Outback springs and struts...

Here's a comparison of the Liberty struts vs. the Outback ones...

I gained an additional 7cms in the front

And 8cms in the back.

Here's how it ended up looking afterwards...

I haven't measured it since its settled.

Next I spend a few grand and had the rood and bonnet resprayed as the paint was starting to show its age...

And lastly, something my co-worker thinks i'm backwards for doing, I converted the wagon to LPG.

So from here I need to do a few mechanical repairs, replacing the floor mats as the drivers one has worn through, the head unit needs replacing. As it's a double din head unit, I'd like to put in a touch screen DVD player that has bluetooth, GPS and a reversing camera. The camera would need to be mounted to the replacement rear bar I hope to buy to hold my spare tyre, as the tyre is currently just sitting in the boot.
Here is a pic of what the bar would look like. (The car car shown is a Forester)

Once all that is done I'll be happy.

Good to see you modding it to your tastes and needs.

As a previous Gen 3 H6 Outback owner I know how well they still handle even when that bit higher.

Double din, niiiice!!!
CURRENT - ATP GTX 3576 - 22psi - 283.7awkw
OLD - Dom 1.5Xtr - Last dyno 254ahkw, previous 238ahkw, first 224awkw.

Yeah it's lots of fun.
I've taken some more pics today as I've been detailing the interior as it was pretty trashed from last weekends camping trip.

Here's the double din head unit. Its due for replacement soon as the volume knob is very temperamental. So I have to resort to using the cassette player to play my music from my phone :?

And speaking of the sound system, I didn't realise until after I had owned the car for roughly 14 months that I had a stacker under my passenger seat...

I also hope to install my twin subs from my old car...

Here is another shot of the interior and my low range gear selector. It took me a while after I bought this car to figure out why I only got one cup holder up front, instead of two. It also shows where i've installed a second 12v port, as when I bought the car the factory one wasn't working.

In the rear I've also installed another port for those long trips. This is before I found out there was an option for a factory port in the side compartment. I originally planned to put two ports in, but the top hole had the tail light interfering behind it. I plan on replacing this panel with a second hand one and repeating the mod with just one 12v port...

Here is a shot of my current boot set up. So again once the new rear bar is on, then the new headunit with reversing camera will be installed, then the subs will be installed in the rear...

And lastly I thought I'd do a shot of my LPG tank...
