Matt those specs (and that link) are for gdb rev D and E jdm sti's. That is, version 8-9.

Graeme's engine was a version 10 dual avcs. These started in 2009 (grb rev A).

There is no chance the cams are the same for the gdb to yours. Reasons are:

1. Dual avcs started on ej207's with grb - different cam profile required

2. Version 8-9 jdm sti's (base model and spec c) all shared the same cam profiles as the earlier Version 7 Spec C RA-R. That is, at version 8, Subaru Japan went to the more aggressive, exclusive spec c cam profile for even their base jdm Sti offerings.

3. Head castings version 8-9 jdm sti's were identical to the version 7 spec c and Ra-r heads. The difference is the version 7 RA-R heads had hand finishing on the port bowels by STI. This practice stopped after the v7 Ra-r.

You can measure the cam lobes from base circle to tip, then deduct the base circle diameter (using the same thickness as the bottom base of the lobe all the way around). This will give you your cam lift.

From what i read some of the spec C cams can be around 260 duration 9.8mm lift, which seems on the ridiculous end of aggressive for a subaru OEM part. however this was just speculation and could be wrong. No doubt with dual AVCS you could retain drivability down low.

Matt's cams that he has there if similar to my spec c ones are around 262 degree inlet, 258 degree exhaust, with 9.8mm inlet valve lift and 10.5mm exhaust valve lift.

Thanks Mick, it's pretty hard to get these specs.

Measured eyeballing with vernier calipers, so the margin of error is probably +/- 0.25mm
9.98 measured intake lift - close enough to 9.8
10.41 measured exhaust lift - close enough to 10.5

I've also done this extremely dodgy unscientific measurement of the Duration.
Image
258 exhaust is at least close

Image
Intake is much harder because it's not at the end of the cam. The pic suggests it's about 248 degrees, which is quite a bit shy of the 262.

Also found this -
Image
This would make more sense that my cams are have less intake duration, as the tomei poncams are 256, which is less than the 262 you mentioned.

The interesting thing will be where I start running out of puff. See if I can use all 8000 RPM.

I think your heads and turbo will be a restriction before your cams to be honest

Beauty of dual avcs is ability to extend the duration timing in upper rev range, almost like having an extra 10 degrees duration to play with.

Since you've gone with the cams Matt, will you look into Port and Polish? while the heads are off

yeah I agree - I'm more thinking about the turbo. With the VF36 I had full torque from 3000 to about 5600, but it dropped right off and peak power was at about 6000RPM. The GTX3071R with these cams and valve springs should give me a higher power band, but a larger power band.

I looked into it, but it's not worth the money - I've pretty much done my budget at this point, the dregs I have left I need to get it back together and going (obviously will need a tune and probably a few bits and pieces.)

Small tip - get rid of the stock location for a broader powerband ;)

Is that bc able to run a bigger inlet? ^

Bob, what of the ancillary hoses on the block are you replacing and sourced from where?
Eg heater/breather etc...

Yes - but the reasons why this is important are:

1. Widening the surge and choke lines
2. Top end breathing greatly improved with less restriction in the inlet tract

Most of it is going back on, 12.5mm breather oil hose to catch can probably mounted where TMIC used to be.

Tonight I got my wrap on.

false start - put it on the wrong way. whoops.
Image

Again!
Image

Wrapped the up and dump as well. I used 4 rolls of 25 feet x 2 inch titanium wrap at $50 each. Should keep the under bonnet temps under control, and give me every last bit of spool I can get.
Image

Valve springs have been delayed, but the Brembo adapters arrived. Still plenty of stuff to do, but irritating because I need to re-order what I'm doing. My infrared thermometer arrived, so I'm ready to do the guards now.

I also picked up a cheap slightly used set of DZ102 Direzzas in 235/40/18 to go on later.

Goodies arrived!
From japan
Image
and other places:
Image

My yocam (http://getyocam.com/) arrived which I will use to take action video of the car once it's working again. My STi steering wheel and airbag finally arrived from japan as well as my valve springs and retainers.

While I was waiting for the valve springs to arrive, I did a few things. I pressed the adapters into the fuel rail and did a test fit of the fuel rails - looks to be good!
Image

I cut and ground the TGVs I had. Stock EJ20X/Y TGVs are entirely empty, but they are side feed. I picked up these top feed TGVs, but I wanted to remove the splitter.
Image
Image
Image

It's pretty messy work, but it's done.
Image

I changed over the airbag charge from my Lib airbag (which is dual stage vs sti single stage) and it looks awesome in the cabin now I have to say
Image
Audio controls still to come.

I weighed the valve springs and retainers and came up with the following:

Code: Select all
          springs+ret only retainer
EJ20 X/Y      51g        14g
EJ207 08+     48g        11g
Crower Ti     41g        6g

At least you can see where the money is going.

Finally this weekend I started installing them, and I got one head done.

Ok, made a moderate amount of Progress over the last few days!

First, I had a bunch of trouble working out what valve clearances I needed
Image

Cosworth say 0.25mm, Stock is 0.35mm, Tomei say .040mm for GRB

Turns out that if you use the cosworth spec, it eats buckets. GRB apparently have solid valves vs the sodium valves in my head, so I just stuck with the .035mm stock clearance.

By using the buckets from my old engine, I manage to get all 16 within spec without needing new buckets!

Image

Now that I've sorted out the clearances, time to put the heads on!

The ARP lube is messy stuff!
Image
Image

It looks almost like an engine!
Image

Still a lot of stuff to go on, but it's a good start!

Today I started with the rear right hand side:

Truhart adjustable camber arm:
Image

And STi lateral arms:
Image

Universal C spanner! ( 235/40/18 is bigger than 215/45/47 so it needs to go down)
Image

braided lines!
Image

Gaurd roll
Image

Brembo
Image

Image
Image

I think it needs a smidge more camber.

Front right:
Lowered

Rolled:

brembo:

It seems to fit better now that I fixed the camber
